Residency Wellness Program
Family Medicine Residency Program
We can care for patients best when we care for ourselves.
The Stanford Health Care Tri-Valley Family Medicine Residency Program priorities the wellness, health, and job satisfaction of our residents. We believe that the best patient care comes from physicians and staff who are supported in their lives and work.
Supportive Environment
Creating a supportive and collegial environment is essential for resident wellness. Residents engage in retreats, mixers, and other events to build a close-knit team dynamic between faculty, staff, and residents. Our faculty remain in close contact with residents to ensure their physical, emotional, and mental well-being throughout their training.
Balanced Workload
We want our residents to have a healthy balance within their professional and personal lives. One of the wavs we do this is to structure our rotations to ensure that our residents never exceed duty hours. We normalize adequate time off-duty, reasonable patient numbers, and flexible rotation options to accommodate personal and family obligations, such as childcare needs.
Mental Health & Support Resources
We offer mental health counseling services and regular workshops on techniques for stress management, improving sleep, and maintaining a healthy work-life balance. We have a peer support program which pairs each resident with a faculty advisor for mentorship, career planning, and advice sharing.
Shared Decision Making
We want our residents to voice their opinions and help design the residency program by serving on the Program Evaluation Committee, Graduate Medical Education Committee, and Wellness Committees. Residents are encouraged to use feedback mechanisms, such as our annual survey and anonymous reporting system, to suggest improvements for the program.
