Our Program

Aligned with the mission of Stanford Health Care Tri-Valley Hospital and the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, the Tri-Valley Family Medicine (FM) Residency Program fosters a safe, positive and supportive culture for residents, students, faculty and staff.  We provide outstanding training and education to the next generation of family physicians, nurturing their growth into skilled, innovative, and compassionate healthcare professionals. Stanford Health Care Tri-Valley has a long history serving the Tri-Valley communities of Pleasanton, Dublin, Livermore, Danville, San Ramon, and beyond.

We aim to deliver quality patient care, champion inclusivity and diversity, and uphold the highest safety standards to enhance healthcare outcomes. We deeply value the principles of lifelong learning and professional development in a welcoming and supportive learning environment. As such, we offer diverse educational and scholarly opportunities in collaboration with the Stanford School of Medicine and Stanford Health Care.

What Makes Our Program Unique

The Family Medicine Residency Program at Stanford Health Care Tri-Valley is a truly unique program that combines the strengths of community and academic programs. We integrate local physicians’ expertise with the innovative power of Stanford Medicine, providing exceptional training opportunities through patient-centered care rooted in evidence-based practices, the latest research, and a deep understanding of the community we serve.

Key features that set the Stanford Health Care Tri-Valley Family Medicine Residency Program apart include:

  • Integration of Local Expertise and Stanford Medicine:  Our program faculty are a diverse group of experts from academic, community, and underserved clinical practice settings. We teach a combination of leading-edge, evidence-based medicine, academic research and quality improvement skills, and pragmatic wisdom from years of patient care experience in the community. Our faculty are affiliated with Stanford School of Medicine, Stanford Medicine Partners, Palo Alto Medical Foundation, Lucille Packard Children’s Hospital, Axis Community Health, and private practices. The exposure to different practice models and clinical settings helps residents adapt to any setting and sets up a solid foundation for the FM physician.
  • Exceptional Patient-Centered Care and Commitment to Quality: The quality of patient care at Tri-Valley is nationally recognized with top scores in the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade and other hospital quality rankings, including Vizient. This resonates with both our own experience with many patients telling us regularly that this is the best care they’ve ever experienced. By practicing in an efficient, top-performing healthcare system, residents develop leadership skills and learn valuable insights in patient safety, quality improvement, and multidisciplinary teamwork.
  • Diverse Patient Population: Tri-Valley is one of the fastest-growing regions in the East Bay with a wide array of socioeconomic, racial, ethnic, and cultural diversity. Residents gain experience in managing both the breadth and depth of medical conditions—so they’ll be prepared for anything.
  • Research Opportunities: Participation in important research projects at Tri-Valley and our extensive research networks at both Stanford School of Medicine and Stanford Health Care in Palo Alto is all part of Stanford’s world-renowned research infrastructure.
  • Quality of Life: The Tri-Valley region is a fantastic place to live and enjoy your days off with co-residents, family, and friends! See our Community page to learn more about this quiet corner of the Bay Area.
  • State-of-the-Art Facilities: As part of the Stanford Health system, residents have access to high-tech medical equipment and technologies. The hospital provides invasive cardiac services, a certified stroke center, level II NICU, and many surgical services from cardiac bypass to reconstructive breast surgery. The Hacienda Lakes continuity clinic will be in a newly built, state-of-the-art facility about a mile away from the hospital. Plus, a second continuity clinic is sponsored by a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC), Axis Community Health which serves a diverse, vulnerable patient population.
