Resident and Fellowship Electives

Thoracic residents will spend 3-6 months on the Tri-Valley CT surgery service during their residency. Residents operate as the primary surgeon, under direct attending supervision. Each patient is evaluated by the resident, presented to the attending, and subsequently scheduled for surgery if appropriate. Residents act as the primary physician managing the patients postoperatively, working closely with the attending and ICU team. This rotation will provide ideal, initial technical instruction in the operating room for residents having their direct exposure to operative cardiac surgery.  

Internal medicine resident elective at Stanford Tri-Valley is a one-month elective that exposes PGY-2 and PGY-3 residents to patient care at an academic community hospital. Stanford Tri-Valley features a wide variety of patient conditions in multiple care settings. Residents will work directly with attendings, caring for a panel of patients from admission to discharge. They will have more independence in caring for patients and addressing socioeconomic factors of care management. Residents will also have the opportunity to supervise and teach medical students and physician assistant students from Stanford.

The Radiology residents at Stanford have the opportunity to rotate through the Tri-Valley Hospital as an elective rotation, usually spanning at least 2 weeks. During this time, the residents gain exposure to working in a hybrid community setting. Depending on the interest of the resident, the experience can be tailored, with variable emphasis on interventional radional radiology, general diagnostic radiology, and breast imaging. Residents work closely with faculty at Tri-Valley and will be fully involved in the practive and delivery of care, including hands-on experiences in OR procedures.

The Stanford Tri-Valley Critical Care fellow elective aims to provide fellows experience and training in a community hospital-level intensive care unit (ICU). This is a 7-14 day elective opportunity. Fellows will care for a panel of ICU patients with increased independence and under direct supervision of critical care attendings. They will have the opportunity to perform procedures under faculty supervision including central line placement, arterial line placement, endotracheal intubation, dialysis catheter placement, pulmonary artery catheter placement, thoracentesis, chest tube placement, ultrasound guidance and bedside echocardiography.

*Rotation for critical care is 2 weeks.

The SHC Tri-Valley Neurohospitalist Fellow Elective Rotation is a one- to two-week immersive program offering fellows invaluable experience with a diverse and complex patient population. Fellows actively participate in evaluating and managing neurologic cases through the Tri-Valley Neurology Consult Service across all levels of care, including the emergency department, inpatient floors, and ICU.

This rotation enhances fellows’ competencies by exposing them to a wide range of neurologic conditions, including but not limited to the following: acute stroke, vascular disease of the nervous system, headache, peripheral nervous system disorders, infections, seizures and status epilepticus, toxic and metabolic conditions of the nervous system, functional neurologic disorders, autoimmune and paraneoplastic conditions of the nervous system, acute vestibular disorders, neoplastic disorders of the nervous system. Fellows also gain hands-on experience in diagnostic procedures, including EEG interpretation, EMG/NCS, and lumbar punctures.
