Culture and Community
Promoting a welcoming and supportive culture and community is a core value for our GME team. We support residents and faculty who have traveled a further distance to reach a career in medicine and will provide them with the resources and mentorship to succeed once they are here. We want all residents and faculty to truly feel included and have a voice in the GME programs and community. All residents will learn how to identify the needs of and advocate for vulnerable patients. We welcome you to join us to build a kind and supportive culture.
Our GME initiatives include:
- Culture and Community training available for all program leaders and core faculty
- Quarterly Culture and Community Grand Rounds for all residents, on topics such as structural racism in healthcare, recognizing implicit bias and microaggressions, and upstander training.
- Having faculty and resident presence on the SHC Tri-Valley IDHE Council, which promotes community partnership and initiatives, which promotes Culture and Community initiatives throughout the institution and engages with community partners
- Participation for interested residents to become leaders in advancing Culture and Community in their chosen paths in the LEAD Program, working alongside faculty mentors and SHC residents
- Community outreach, including health fairs in the Tri-Valley and showing our presence at many local East Bay community events every month – from the Livermore Cultural Celebration series, Indigenous People’s Day celebrations, Oakland Chinatown’s Lunar New Year celebrations, Oakland Pride Parade to community job fairs and the Native American Health Center’s annual run
