Basic Science Teaching Program
Purpose: To help medical schools meet faculty development needs of basic science teachers who face ever-increasing demands and challenges.
Program: To meet this goal, we developed a "Basic Science Teaching" curriculum -- a revised version of the SFDC's "Clinical Teaching" curriculum -- that is tailored for basic science faculty and teaching assistants. Modifications included video vignettes re-enacting actual teaching interactions collected from institutions around the country.
Training: To disseminate this curriculum, we conducted "Facilitator Retraining" courses that prepared previously trained SFDC Clinical Teaching facilitators to deliver this teaching improvement course to basic science teachers at their home sites.
Results: The revised workshop was disseminated locally at Stanford, nationally, and internationally. Evaluation data showed positive effects of the training on participants' knowledge, skills, and attitudes related to teaching.
