Resources for Retired Faculty

Many of you have expressed interest in continuing to be engaged both intellectually, by teaching, publishing and attending conferences and by contributing to the experience of trainees and junior faculty through mentoring after retirement. Many such opportunities are available if you know where to find them and others may be somewhat limited for those of who participated in FRIP. Here are a few possibilities:

Academic Council Committees - The Senate of the Academic Council discharges its academic and research policy responsibilities in part through seven standing Academic Council Committees.

Haas Center - Inspires Stanford University to realize a just and sustainable world through service, scholarship, and community partnerships. It is the hub of Cardinal Service, a university-wide effort to make service an essential feature of a Stanford education.

Avenidas Palo Alto - Helps older adults in our community be as active, engaged, and healthy as possible throughout their lives by providing relevant services and programs.

Stanford Live - Presents a wide range of the finest performances from around the world fostering a vibrant learning community and providing distinctive experiences through the performing arts.

Living Well in Retirement - All benefits and "perks" after retirement.

Continuing Studies at Stanford - Shares the rich educational resources of Stanford University with adult students, to nurture a vibrant learning community, to nourish the life of the mind, and to promote the pleasures of intellectual exploration. Non STAP-eligible staff, faculty, and students 65 years and older can receive a 20% tuition discount.

Emeriti Council at Stanford - Enhances access to the vast intellectual and social resources of this university.

Healthy Living - Offers several free classes each quarter that Emeriti/ae are welcome to take. (Enter the keyword "Free" to view available free classes for the quarter).

Lane Library -  Provides (1) Research Services to include a breadth of literature search services, data services and publishing/research impact services and (2) Trainings/Workshops typically of most interest to faculty including Choosing the Best Journal, Improving your Research Impact and more.

Medicine & the Muse Program - Home for the arts and humanities at the medical school, with programs that support diversity and integrate the arts and humanities into medical education, scholarly endeavors, and the practice of medicine.

Sweeteners Benefits for Retirees - Stanford Sweeteners presents the "sweetest" perks and rewards of being affiliated with Stanford, from discounts and incentives in travel to facilities access and professional development.

Transportation Benefits for Retirees – Stanford offers many free or discounted options.

Recreational Facilities - Your Stanford ID Card gives you access to Stanford’s many world-class athletic facilities, including recreation centers, pools, etc., on the main campus and in Redwood City. Faculty Club - The Faculty Club provides Stanford faculty, administrative staff, and other club members with a welcoming venue to promote social interaction, commingling, fellowship, collegiality, and the interchange of ideas and information.

Q: Can I use the title "Retired Faculty" if I retire on the Clinician Educator (CE) line?

A: Upon retirement and upon meeting certain qualifications, Clinician Educators may request Staff Emeritus or Staff Emerita status. Please see Handbook 3.3G

Q: Can I continue to mentor students/faculty/fellows, etc. after I retire?

A: By agreement with your Chair, you may do so as an UNPAID volunteer.

Q: What "perks" are available to retirees?

• Email address and IT support with approval 

Q: Can I continue to be P.I. after I retire?

A: You can remain a P.I. on a recall under regular retirement with approval of Chair. 

Q: Am I still eligible for "Be Well"?

A: Yes. Retired Faculty are eligible to participate in BeWell classes and programs. Classes are offered on the main campus and in Redwood City. Their web site is http://bewell.stanford.edu and they may be contacted at (650) 723-9649.

Q: Am I eligible to take continuing studies courses?

A: YES!- You (and your spouse) may be eligible for a tuition reduction if you previously taught a class for Continuing Studies.
