Wells (PE) Risk Calculator Released

The SEAL team works directly with clinicians to rapidly deploy clinical workflow efficiency improvements in Epic. Our latest app, requested by hospitalist Shreya Shah, is Wells clinical risk calculator for pulmonary embolism.

The Wells’ Criteria risk stratifies patients for pulmonary embolism (PE) and provides an estimated pre-test probability. The physician can then chose what further testing is required for diagnosing pulmonary embolism (I.E. d-dimer or CT angiogram). This commonly used calculator is now available within Epic at Stanford Healthcare. Rather than switching to an external web browser to input data into an online risk calculator, clinicians can call up the SEAL “Wells PE Score” app from within Epic Hyperspace.

The app is launched within the current patient context and displays relevant information from the patient chart on the same screen as the calculator, as well as pre-selecting patient age, sex, and whatever risk categories seem indicated by algorithmic match with selected clinical data. The problem list is displayed side-by-side with the calculator, to facilitiate the clinical risk assessment.

After completing the risk assessment, the resulting score and formal clinical justification can be pasted into the patient chart courtesy of the “Copy” button at the bottom of the page, which generates a block of text suitable for pasting into a clinic note.

Thanks to Dr. Shreya Shah for the suggestion to build this very useful clinical risk prediction tool.
