Stroke Risk Prediction

Calculate the CHA2DS2-Vasc score to assess annual risk of stroke and thromboembolism in patients with atrial fibrillation.

What problem do we aim to solve?

The CHA2DS2-Vasc score is regarded as the standard of care to guide anticoagulation therapy in patients with atrial fibrillation for prevention of stroke and thromboembolism.  Validated risk prediction models such as the CHA2DS2-Vasc score are underutilized due to difficulty in accessing these tools from the EHR and finding the relevant data from patient medical records to calculate the risk scores.

How does the app address this problem?

The SEAL stroke risk prediction app facilitates the calculation of the CHA2DS2-Vasc score by 1) allowing the user to launch the risk calculator from within the patient chart to minimize disruption in workflow, 2) pulling and classifying relevant data from the patient chart to guide the clinician in populating the risk calculator, and 3) enabling the clinician to copy the results into a clinical note.

What are future opportunities for innovation?

The UI/UXR design and data integration methods used by the SEAL PE risk stratification app will be applied to future point of care clinical risk prediction tools for Stanford clinicians that leverage more sophisticated predictive analytics, such as machine learning.
