AREDS Simplified Severity Score Calculator

Patient education and communication tool delineating the 5-year risk of advanced AMD

What problem do we aim to solve?

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of blindness in our elderly population. Proper risk stratification is essential for patient management, but is not often done due to time and workflow constraints.

How does the app address this problem?

The app implements a simple 4 point scale, validated using clinical trial data, that allows for the calculation of 5-year risk of progression to advanced AMD. This data can be used for documentation, patient education materials, planning preventative interventions and in-office patient counseling.

The AREDS Simplified Severity Score Calculator app allows the MD to calculate the AREDS Simpified Severity Score for each AMD patient. On loading app, the MD is asked to grade the Right and Left eye on a 0-2 scale using buttons for the presence of 1) Large Drusen, 2) Pigment Changes and 3) CNV or GA in each eye. The calculator then adds the points (max of 2 per eye) to give a total score of 0 - 4. This data can then be copied and pasted into the Visit Note and Patient Instrucitons section of the visit with an accompanying graph to delineate the 5-year risk of advanced AMD.

The resulting data can be used for documentation, patient education materials, planning preventative interventions and in-office patient counseling.

What are future opportunities for innovation?

The SEAL application framework is an ideal platform for similar clinical risk calculators.
