NIH uses activity codes (e.g. R01, R43, etc.) to differentiate the wide variety of research-related programs we support. Research grants may be investigator-initiated or can be solicited via a Request for Applications. Research Project (R), Research Project Cooperative Agreements (U), and Research Program Projects (P) will be discussed in this section.

The Stanford Proposal Development Office (PDO) provides proposal development support to School of Medicine PIs and investigative teams pursuing large or complex grants. They provide support tailored to the unique needs of large grant proposals with the goal of increasing proposal competitiveness and decreasing the administrative burden of application preparation. Please contact the PDO to discuss support for your proposal.

(NEW!) Training Grant Data System (TGDS)
The Training Grant Data System automates the collection and organization of information needed for the Data Tables of an NIH Institutional Research Training Grant (T32) application/renewal and progress/final report. The Data Tables are also utilized by other NIH training grants: K12/KL2, R25, T15, and T35.

NIH (T32) Training Grant Letter of Institutional Support (Required for all T32 proposals by NIH)
The letter is provided through the office of the School of Medicine, Senior Associate Dean for Graduate Education & Postdoctoral Affairs to ensure all required institutional information is provided. Note: the letter also includes the required assurance of non-discrimination (no longer a separate letter). This document contacts a template for the letter as well as the required signature process.

Career Development (K) provide individual and institutional career development opportunities to supported candidates at the postdoctoral, early career, and mid career levels. The objective of these programs is to bring candidates to the point where they are able to conduct their research independently and are competitive for major grant support. A designated mentor is typically required.

Career Development (K Award) Resources

Most candidates for NIH Career Development Awards will need a PI Waiver. 

An NIH Career Development (K) Award should be processed as a Grant by your institutional official (RPM/RMG or CGO/OSR).  Please submit a Proposal Intake Form (PIF) in SeRA to begin the application process.

NIH supports training of graduate students and postdoctoral fellows through the Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (NRSA) program. These fellowships provide a stipend for salary support and a small institutional allowance to partially offset the costs of research, tuition, and health insurance.

Fellowship (F Award) Resources

An NIH Fellowship (F) Award should be processed as a Fellowship in SeRA by your institutional official (Fellowship Office/RMG or CGO/OSR).  Please review and follow the Fellowship Proposal Checklist to begin the application process.

An Other Transactions Authority (OTA) allows for Federal Government agencies to enter into Other Transaction (OTs). An Other Transaction (OT) is a unique type of legal instrument other than a contract, grant, or cooperative agreement. Generally, this awarding instrument is not subject to the FAR, nor grant regulations unless otherwise noted for certain provisions in the terms and conditions of award. It is, however, subject to the OT authority that governs the initiative as well as applicable legislative mandates. Learn about Other Transactions and NIH's Other Transactions Authorities (OTAs).

OTAs often require a rapid response. If you are planning to submit a proposal in response to an OTA, please contact your Research Process Manager (RPM) as soon as possible.
