NIH Research Security Training Requirements
Effective for Submissions Due on and after May 25, 2026
A memo was sent on March 31, 2026 to the Stanford Research Community that provided a brief overview of this requirement. That memo can be accessed here.
Per NOT-OD-26-2017, in accordance with the CHIPS and Science Act of 2022 (§10634), NIH will begin implementing the requirement for Research Security Training for all senior/key personnel on NIH submissions due on or after May 25, 2026. Further, they must complete and certify to completing Research Security Training within 12 months of application submission.
It is expected that NIH will update the certification language in the Biographical Sketch Common Form to include an attestation that the investigator has completed Research Security Training. This means that submission of a certified Common Form biosketch means that you are certifying to have completed research security training, as well.
IMPORTANT: Stanford Institutional Officials cannot submit the application to the NIH until all Stanford senior/key personnel have completed the research security training.
More broadly, a few Federal agencies (e.g., NSF, NASA, DoE, etc.) have started to implement this requirement as of last year. Please visit the ORA Research Security Training website for more detailed information on which federal agencies have started implementation and any supplemental instructions.
NIH Guidance: SciENcv and Current & Pending (Other) Support
The NIH implemented updated Common Forms requirements for Biosketches and Current & Pending (Other) Support (CPOS) effective January 25, 2026. These changes impact how information is prepared, where it is entered (SciENcv), and how it is reviewed as part of the proposal submission process.
