Translational Research Award
Amount of funding: Direct costs budgeted for the entire period of performance will not exceed $1M.
Purpose: The FY23 VRP TRA is intended to support translational research that moves promising discoveries into clinical applications that will advance the prevention, diagnosis, mitigation, and/or treatment of eye injury or visual dysfunction associated with military exposure. Successful applications to the FY23 VRP TRA should establish a clear path to transforming a promising discovery into new drugs, devices, or clinical practice guidelines that are ready for definitive testing in clinical trials. For new drug or device development, the investigative team should include at least one collaborator with expertise in the regulatory approval process.
Eligibility: Independent investigators - Faculty with PI eligibility and CE faculty (with an approved CE faculty PI waiver obtained through their RPM in RMG prior to the pre-application/letter of intent) may be the PI.

Each MCRA must be led by an established clinician or Ph.D. clinical scientist who will serve as Principal Investigator (PI) of the award. Key personnel must include a physician-intraining (e.g., fellows, residents, junior clinician) with at least 18 months remaining in their training program.
Eligibility: Established clinicians or Ph.D. clinical scientists may be named by the organization as the PI on the application. If the PI does not have an independent faculty appointment with PI eligibility, a Career Development PI waiver will be required to be obtained through their RPM in RMG prior to the pre-application/letter of intent.
