DoD Tuberous Sclerosis Complex Research Program
Exploration - Hypothesis Development Award
Amount of funding: Direct costs budgeted for the entire period of performance will not exceed $150,000.
Purpose: The EHDA supports the initial exploration of innovative, high-risk, high-gain, and potentially groundbreaking concepts in the TSC research field. The studies supported by this award mechanism are expected to generate preliminary data for future avenues of scientific investigation. The proposed research project should include a well-formulated, testable hypothesis based on a strong scientific rationale and study design. Applications should demonstrate the ability to achieve interpretable results in the absence of preliminary data supporting the hypothesis.
Eligibility: Independent investigators - Faculty with PI eligibility and CE faculty (with an approved CE faculty PI waiver obtained through their RPM in RMG prior to the pre-application/letter of intent) may be the PI.
Not eligible: Even though the guidelines state "investigators and postdoctoral fellows (or equivalent)," are eligible, this is not a mentored career development award (the application does not require a statement from the mentor). Therefore, Instructors, Clinical Instructors, Academic staff-research (i.e., research associates), and Postdoctoral fellows are not eligible to request a Career Development PI waiver. Stanford does not consider these to be independaent positions.

Idea Development Award
Amount of funding: Direct costs budgeted for the entire period of performance will not exceed $500,000.
Purpose: The IDA promotes ideas that have the potential to yield high-impact findings and new avenues of investigation. This award mechanism supports conceptually innovative research that could ultimately lead to critical discoveries in TSC research and/or improvements in patient care. Research projects should include a well-formulated, testable hypothesis based on strong preliminary data and scientific rationale.
Established Investigator Eligibility: Independent investigators - Faculty with PI eligibility and CE faculty (with an approved CE faculty PI waiver obtained through their RPM in RMG prior to the pre-application/letter of intent) may be the PI.
New-to-the-field Investigator Eligibility:
(1) Independent investigators - Stanford Assistant Professors with PI eligibility and CE Assistant Professors (with an approved CE faculty PI waiver obtained through their RPM in RMG prior to the pre-application/letter of intent). See the guidelines for other criteria.
(2) Established Independent Investigators in an area other than TSC seeking to transition to a career in TSC thereby bringing his/her expertise to the field. The PI must be Stanford faculty with PI eligibility and CE faculty (with an approved CE faculty PI waiver obtained through their RPM in RMG prior to the pre-application/letter of intent).
Not eligible: Stanford Instructors, Clinical Instructors, Academic Staff-research, and Postdocs are not eligible because Stanford does not consider them to hold independent or faculty level positions.
