Clinical Trial Award
Amount of funding: Direct costs budgeted for the entire period of performance will not exceed $1M without an Optional Qualified Collaboration or $1.2M with an Optional Qualified Collaboration.
Purpose: The NFRP Clinical Trial Award supports the rapid implementation of clinical trials with the potential to have a significant impact on the treatment or management of NF. Clinical trials may be designed to evaluate promising new products, pharmacologic agents (drugs or biologics), devices, clinical guidance, and/or emerging approaches and technologies. Proposed projects may DOD FY23 Neurofibromatosis Clinical Trial Award 5 range from small proof-of-concept trials (e.g., pilot, first in human, phase 0) to demonstrate the feasibility or inform the design of more advanced trials through large-scale trials to determine efficacy in relevant patient populations.
Eligibility: Independent investigators - Faculty with PI eligibility and CE faculty (with an approved CE faculty PI waiver obtained through their RPM in RMG prior to the pre-application/letter of intent) may be the PI.
Not eligible: Instructors, Clinical Instructors, Postdoctoral Fellows, Clinical Fellows, Academic staff-researchers (research associates) are not eligible because Stanford does not consider them to hold an independent or faculty-level positions

Exploration - Hypothesis Development Award
Amount of funding: Direct costs budgeted for the entire period of performance will not exceed $100,000.
Purpose: The NFRP Exploration - Hypothesis Development Award supports the initial exploration of innovative, high-risk, high-gain, and potentially groundbreaking concepts in NF research. Studies supported by this award mechanism are expected to lay the groundwork for future DOD FY23 Neurofibromatosis Exploration – Hypothesis Development Award 5 avenues of scientific investigation. The proposed research project should include a wellformulated, testable hypothesis based on strong scientific rationale and study design. The presentation of preliminary and/or published data is not required.
Eligibility: Independent investigators - Faculty with PI eligibility and CE faculty (with an approved CE faculty PI waiver obtained through their RPM in RMG prior to the pre-application/letter of intent) may be the PI. This is a research grant and not a mentored career development award.
Not eligible: Instructors, Clinical Instructors, Postdoctoral Fellows, Clinical Fellows, Academic staff-researchers (research associates) are not eligible because Stanford does not consider them to hold independent or faculty-level positions. A Career Development PI waiver is not applicable for this award.

New Investigator Award
Amount of funding: Direct costs budgeted for the entire period of performance will not exceed $450,000.
Purpose: The intent of the NFRP New Investigator Award is to support the continued development of promising Early-Stage Investigators and/or the transition of Established Investigators from other research fields into a career in the field of NF research. Prior experience in NF research is not DOD FY23 Neurofibromatosis New Investigator Award 5 required. However, Principal Investigators (PIs) with a limited background in NF research are strongly encouraged to have a collaborator who is experienced in the NF field.
Early Stage Investigator Eligibility: Independent Investigators - Assistant Professors with PI eligibility and CE Assistant Professors (with an approved CE faculty PI waiver obtained through their RPM in RMG prior to the pre-application/letter of intent).
Established Investigator Eligibility: Independent Investigators - Faculty with PI eligibility and CE faculty (with an approved CE faculty PI waiver obtained through their RPM in RMG prior to the pre-application/letter of intent) in an area other than NF. See guidelines for details.

Early Investigator Research Award
Amount of funding: Direct costs budgeted for the entire period of performance will not exceed $200,000.
Purpose: The Early Investigator Research Award supports NF-focused research opportunities for individuals in the early stages of their careers, under the guidance of a Designated Mentor. This opportunity allows for early-stage investigators to develop a research project, investigate a DOD FY23 Neurofibromatosis Early Investigator Research Award 5 problem or question in NF research, and further their intellectual development as an NF researcher of the future. The postdoctoral investigator is considered the Principal Investigator (PI) of the application and must exhibit strong potential for, and commitment to, pursuing a career as an investigator at the forefront of NF research; however, the PI is not required to have previous NF research experience. Applications must include at least one mentor, appropriate to the proposed research project, who has experience in NF research and mentoring as demonstrated by a record of active funding, recent publications, and successful mentorship.
Eligibility: The investigator must:
-Be involved in a postdoctoral training or medical residency program (Career Development PI waiver required); and
-Possess up to 4 years of continuous postdoctoral research experience by the application submission deadline; and
-Possess a doctoral degree (i.e., Ph.D., M.D./Ph.D., D.O./Ph.D.) or a clinical doctoral degree (i.e., M.D./D.O. or Ph.D. in a clinical discipline) from an accredited organization or program

Synergistic Idea Award
Amount of funding: Direct costs budgeted for the entire period of performance will not exceed $2M.
Purpose: The NFRP Synergistic Idea Award supports new ideas that represent synergistic approaches to NF research involving two or three Principal Investigators (PIs). These investigators should utilize their complementary and synergistic perspectives to address a central problem or question DOD FY23 Neurofibromatosis Synergistic Idea Award 5 in NF research. This award is designed to support both new and pre-existing partnerships and encourages participation of PIs from other research fields. Applications must include preliminary and/or published data that are relevant to NF and the proposed research project.

Investigator-Initiated Research Award
Amount of funding: Maximum of $525,000 direct costs. Proposals that include either the Qualified Collaborator or the NF-OSI option: $575,000 direct costs. Proposals that include either the Qualified Collaborator or the NF-OSI Option: $575,000 direct costs.
Purpose: The NFRP Investigator-Initiated Research Award supports highly rigorous, high-impact research projects that have the potential to make an important contribution to NF research and/or patient care. Research projects may focus on any phase of research, excluding clinical trials. The DOD FY23 Neurofibromatosis Investigator-Initiated Research Award 5 rationale for a research idea may be derived from laboratory discovery, population-based studies, a clinician’s firsthand knowledge of patients, or anecdotal data. Applications must include preliminary and/or published data that are relevant to NF and the proposed research project.
Eligibility: Independent Investigators - Faculty with PI eligibility and CE faculty (with an approved CE faculty PI waiver obtained through their RPM in RMG prior to the pre-application/letter of intent) may serve as PI. Each principal investigator must be at or above the level of Assistant Professor (or equivalent), and plan to commit at least a 10% level of effort for each budget period throughout the entirety of the award.

Neurofibromatosis Research Academy-Leadership Award

Purpose: The NFRP Neurofibromatosis Research Academy (NFRA) will bring together established investigators (Director and Deputy Director) and early-career independent investigators (Scholars) to develop successful, highly productive neurofibromatosis researchers that will conduct research with the aim of lessening the clinical impact of NF1, NF2, and Schwannomatosis. The NFRA is a unique, multi-institutional interactive virtual research academy focused on supporting innovative high-impact research in a collaborative research and career development environment. The NFRA will provide a framework of intensive monitoring and iterative guidance with proposed research, national networking, collaborations, and a peer group for Scholars.
Eligibility: Independent Investigators - Faculty with PI eligibility and CE faculty (with an approved CE faculty PI waiver obtained through their RPM in RMG prior to the pre-application/letter of intent) at or above the level of Associate Professor may serve as PI.
