DoD Melanoma Research Program
Idea Award
Amount of funding: Total costs budgeted for the entire period of performance will not exceed $560,000.
Purpose: The FY25 MRP Idea Award supports innovative, untested, exploratory, high-risk/potentially highreward concepts, theories, paradigms, and/or methods that address at least one of the FY25 MRP focus areas. The intent of the Idea Award is to generate novel research avenues for investigation; therefore, novelty and innovation should be key aspects of the proposed project. Research supported by the Idea Award must introduce a new paradigm, challenge existing paradigms, look at existing problems from new perspectives, or exhibit other highly creative qualities.
Eligibility: Independent investigators - Faculty with PI eligibility and CE faculty (with an approved CE faculty PI waiver obtained through their RPM in RMG prior to the pre-application/letter of intent) may be the PI.
Not eligible: Although it states “To be named as the PI on the application, the investigator must be at or above the level of Postdoctoral Fellow or equivalent”, the RFP is a research grant and not a mentored career development award (the RFP and the application do not require a statement from the mentor). Therefore, Stanford Instructors, Clinical Instructors, Academic Staff-research, an Postdocs are not eligible as they are unable to qualify for a career development PI waiver.

Survivorship Research Award
Amount of funding: Total costs budgeted for the entire period of performance will not exceed $1.015M.
Purpose: The intent of the Survivorship Research Award (SRA) is to address the relatively new and underfunded area of melanoma-specific survivorship by supporting a broad range of innovative and impactful research that has the intended outcome of improving the health and well-being of melanoma survivors, their families, and/or their caregivers (Figure 1). Applications may propose development of evidence-based practices, behavioral health science and survivor and/or caregiver well-being interventions and surveillance, and/or identification of psychosocial survivor outcomes. Clinical trials are allowed.
Eligibility: Independent investigators - Faculty with PI eligibility and CE faculty (with an approved CE faculty PI waiver obtained through their RPM in RMG prior to the pre-application/letter of intent) may be the PI.
Not eligible: Instructors, Clinical Instructors, Postdoctoral Fellows, Clinical Fellows, Academic staff-researchers (research associates) are not eligible because Stanford does not consider them to hold independent or faculty-level positions.
Timeline:

Team Science Award
Amount of funding: The combined total costs budgeted for the entire period of performance in the applications of the Initiating PI and each Partnering PI should not exceed $2.1M.
Purpose: The intent of the FY25 MRP TSA is to support a broad range of hypothesis-driven, multidisciplinary studies that are responsive to at least one of the FY25 MRP focus areas and have the short-term goal of advancing the state of the science in melanoma research and/or patient care. Team science is a synergistic effort that harnesses techniques, approaches, and perspectives from multiple disciplines and/or therapeutic areas to address complex, multidimensional problems that will impact patient outcomes. The TSA is intended to bring together investigators from divergent disciplines to achieve innovations and advancements in melanoma research and/or patient care that could not be achieved by any one investigator working independently.

Focused Program Award – Rare Melanomas
Amount of funding: The combined total costs budgeted for the entire period of performance in the applications of the Initiating PI and each Partnering PI should not exceed $2.8M.
Purpose: The FY25 MRP FPA-RM is intended to support a multidisciplinary research program of at least two, but not more than three, distinct but complementary projects addressing an overarching question relevant to rare melanomas (see Figure 1). Applications for the FPA-RM may propose projects across the entire research spectrum (biology, etiology, prevention, diagnosis and detection, prognosis, treatment, and quality of life) and must address a critical unmet need relevant to rare melanomas.

Melanoma Academy Scholar Award
Amount of funding: Total costs budgeted for the entire period of performance will not exceed $770,000.
Purpose: The intent of the FY25 MASA is to solicit applications for Scholars to join the MA. This award mechanism enables the Scholar to pursue a melanoma project, with the guidance of a Career Guide, that may be basic, translational, and/or clinical research and addresses at least one of the FY25 MRP focus areas. The Career Guide does not have to be at the same institution as the Scholar. In addition to the activities described above, the Scholar and their Career Guide are required to attend a DOD MRP biennial multi-day MA workshop. In alternate years, they must also attend a DOD MRP MA one-day workshop.
Eligibility (Career Guide): Independent investigators - Faculty with PI eligibility and CE faculty (with an approved CE faculty PI waiver obtained through their RPM in RMG prior to the pre-application/letter of intent) at or above the level of Associate Professor may be the Career Guide.
Eligibility (Scholar): Must be an independent investigator no more than 7 years from obtaining their first faculty-level appointment as of the full application submission deadline. Faculty with PI eligibility and CE faculty (with an approved CE faculty PI waiver obtained through their RPM in RMG prior to the pre-application/letter of intent) are eligible.

Purpose: The FY25 Melanoma Academy Leadership Award (MALA) mechanism is soliciting applications for a Director and Deputy Director to continue the MA and lead the effort towards achieving its overarching goal. The MA Director and Deputy Director (referred to as MA Leadership) must be established melanoma researchers and should be at different institutions. The MA Leadership must demonstrate a strong record of mentoring and training early-career independent investigators, a commitment to leadership and establishing and sustaining research collaborations, and the ability to objectively assess the progress of all Scholars in the MA.
