DoD Lung Cancer Research Program
Concept Award
Amount of funding: Direct costs budgeted for the entire period of performance will not exceed $100,000.
Purpose: The intent of the FY23 LCRP Concept Award is to support innovative, non-incremental, highrisk/potentially high-reward research that will provide new insights, paradigms, technologies, or applications in lung cancer. Studies supported by this award are expected to lay the groundwork for future avenues of scientific investigation. The proposed research project should include a well-formulated, testable hypothesis based on a sound scientific rationale and study design. Research applications only in the area of mesothelioma will not be accepted.
Eligibility: Independent investigators - Faculty with PI eligibility and CE faculty (with an approved CE faculty PI waiver obtained through their RPM in RMG prior to the pre-application/letter of intent) may be the PI.
Stanford eligibility clarification - Not eligible: even though the guidelines indicate "investigators at or above the level of postdoctoral fellow" may serve as PI, the application and guidelines do not require a mentor. Therefore, this is considered a research grant and the Stanford PIship policy only permits independent faculty to apply. Since it is not mentored career development award, Instructors, Clinical Instructors, Academic Staff-Research (i.e., research associates), Postdocs, and Clinical fellows are not eligible (they may not submit career development PI waivers).

Career Development Award
Amount of funding: Direct costs budgeted for the entire period of performance will not exceed $375,000.
Purpose: The FY23 LCRP Career Development Award supports early-career, independent investigators to conduct impactful research under the mentorship of an experienced lung cancer researcher as an opportunity to obtain the funding, mentoring, and experience necessary for productive, independent careers at the forefront of lung cancer research. Research applications only in the area of mesothelioma will not be accepted. This award is intended to support impactful research projects with an emphasis on discovery.
Eligibility: Independent Investigators: The PI must be an independent investigator at the level of Assistant Professor or CE Assistant Professor (with an approved CE faculty PI waiver obtained through their RPM at least 1-2 weeks prior to the pre-proposal submission), and be within 5 years of their first faculty appointment (or equivalent) by the time of the application submission deadline.
Mentor: The Mentor must hold a position at or above the level of an Associate Professor (or equivalent). The Mentor must have a proven publication and funding record in lung cancer research.
Not eligible: Instructors, Clinical Instructors, Academic staff-research (i.e., research associates), and postdocs are not eligible for this RFP because Stanford does not consider them to hold independent positions.

Idea Development Award
Amount of funding: Direct costs budgeted for the entire period of performance will not exceed $525,000.
Purpose: The FY23 LCRP Idea Development Award mechanism promotes new ideas that are still in the early stages of development and have the potential to yield impactful data and new avenues of investigation. This award supports conceptually innovative, high-risk/high-reward research that could lead to critical discoveries or major advancements that will accelerate progress toward eradicating deaths and suffering from lung cancer. Research applications only in the area of mesothelioma will not be accepted. Applications should include a well-formulated, testable hypothesis based on strong scientific rationale.
Eligibility: Established Investigators: Independent investigators at or above the level of Assistant Professor (or equivalent) with PI eligibility and at or above CE Assistant Professor (with an approved CE faculty PI waiver obtained through their RPM at least 1-2 weeks prior to the pre-proposal submission) are eligible to be named as the PI on the application.
New Investigators: Independent investigators at the level of Assistant Professor with PI eligibility and CE Assistant Professor (with an approved CE faculty PI waiver obtained through their RPM at least 1-2 weeks prior to the pre-proposal submission) and less than 10 years from his/her first faculty appointment (or equivalent) at the time of the application submission deadline are eligible to be named as the PI on the application.
Not eligible: Instructors, Clinical Instructors, Academic staff-research (i.e., research associates), and postdocs are not eligible for this RFP because Stanford does not consider them to hold independent positions.

Translational Research Award
Amount of funding: Direct costs budgeted for the entire period of performance will not exceed $900,000 (Funding Level 1) or $1.2M (Funding Level 2).
Purpose: The FY23 LCRP Translational Research Award mechanism supports advanced translational research that will foster transformation of promising ideas in lung cancer into clinical applications. Translational research may be defined as an integration of basic science and clinical observations. Observations that drive a research idea may originate from a laboratory discovery, population-based studies, or a clinician’s firsthand knowledge of patient care. The ultimate goal of translational research is to move a concept or observation forward into clinical application. However, Principal Investigators (PIs) should not view translational research as a one-way continuum from bench to bedside, but can include a reciprocal flow of ideas and information between basic science and clinical science (bench to bedside and/or bedside to bench). Research applications only in the area of mesothelioma will not be accepted.
Eligibility: Independent investigators - Faculty with PI eligibility and CE faculty (with an approved CE faculty PI waiver obtained through their RPM in RMG prior to the pre-application/letter of intent) may be PI.
Not eligible: Instructors, Clinical Instructors, Academic staff-research (i.e., research associates), and postdocs are not eligible for this RFP because Stanford does not consider them to hold independent positions.

Patient-Centered Outcomes and Survivorship Award
Amount of funding: Direct costs budgeted for the entire period of performance will not exceed $650,000.
Purpose: The Patient-Centered Outcomes and Survivorship Award supports high-risk, high-reward research studies that span the spectrum of behavioral health science, survivorship, health outcomes and comparative effectiveness research, including quality of life, symptom and side effect management, resilience, co-morbid conditions, and examining the physical, psychological, social, and economic effects of lung cancer among patients and their families. The overall intent of the FY23 LCRP Patient-Centered Outcomes and Survivorship Award is to promote evidence-based and patient-centered approaches to improve health and lung cancer related outcomes and enhance the patient experience in defined populations.
