DoD Kidney Cancer Research Program
Concept Award
Amount of funding: Direct costs budgeted for the entire period of performance will not exceed $100,000.
Purpose: The FY23 KCRP Concept Award supports highly innovative, untested, potentially groundbreaking novel concepts in kidney cancer. The Concept Award is not intended to support an incremental progression of an already established research project but, instead, it allows Principal Investigators (PIs) the opportunity to pursue serendipitous observations. Preliminary data are not allowed and should not be discussed. This award mechanism supports high-risk studies that have the potential to reveal entirely new avenues for investigation. Applications must describe how the new idea will enhance the existing knowledge of kidney cancer or develop an innovative and novel course of investigation.
Eligibility: Independent investigators - Faculty with PI eligibility and CE faculty (with an approved CE faculty PI waiver obtained through their RPM in RMG prior to the pre-application/letter of intent) may be the PI.
Not eligible: Although it states “All investigators at or above the level of postdoctoral fellow (or equivalent) are eligible”, the RFP is a research grant and not a mentored career development award. The RFP and the application do not require a statement from the mentor. Therefore, Stanford Instructors, Clinical Instructors, Academic Staff-research, an Postdocs are not eligible (they are not able to request a career development PI waiver).

Translational Research Partnership Award
Amount of funding: Direct costs budgeted for the entire period of performance will not exceed $750,000.
Purpose: The FY23 KCRP Translational Research Partnership Award supports partnerships between clinicians and research scientists that will accelerate the movement of promising ideas in kidney cancer toward clinical applications. This award supports the development of translational research collaborations between two independent, faculty-level (or equivalent) investigators to address a central problem or question in kidney cancer in a manner that would be less readily achievable through separate efforts. One partner in the collaboration must be a research scientist and the other must be a clinician.
Eligibility: Independent investigators - Faculty with PI eligibility and CE faculty (with an approved CE faculty PI waiver obtained through their RPM in RMG prior to the pre-application/letter of intent) may be the Initiating PI or Partnering PI.
Not eligible: Stanford Instructors, Clinical Instructors, Academic Staff-research, and Postdocs are not eligible because Stanford does not consider them to be independent or faculty level positions.

Postdoctoral and Clinical Fellowship Award
Amount of funding: Direct costs budgeted for the entire period of performance will not exceed $195,000.
Purpose: The FY23 KCRP Postdoctoral and Clinical Fellowship Award supports recent doctoral or medical school graduates in pursuit of innovative, high-impact kidney cancer research during their postdoctoral and/or clinical fellowship and allows them to obtain the necessary experience for an independent career as a leader in kidney cancer research. Applicants must demonstrate that the proposed research has high potential to lead to, or make, significant advancements in kidney cancer research and/or patient care. Applicants for this award must also exhibit a strong desire to pursue a career in kidney cancer research, with clear evidence for a researcher development plan that will lead to a successful independent career in kidney cancer.
Eligibility: Only postdoctoral and/or clinical fellows are eligible. Faculty members and all other nonpostdoctoral and clinical fellow positions are not eligible. PIs must apply for a Career Development PI waiver 1-2 weeks prior to the Pre-application/Letter of intent deadline. As of the application submission deadline, all eligible PIs must have:
- Successfully completed the requirements for a doctoral and/or medical degree
- Be in the laboratory or clinical research setting in which the proposed research is to be performed as a postdoctoral or clinical fellow
- Have four years or less of postdoctoral and/or mentored clinical research training experience (excluding family medical leave)

Academy of Kidney Cancer Investigators Early-Career Scholar Award
Amount of funding: Direct costs budgeted for the entire period of performance will not exceed $725,000.
Purpose: The Academy of Kidney Cancer Investigators (AKCI) is a virtual career development and research mentoring platform that consists of Early-Career Scholar (ECS)/Designated Mentor pairs from different institutions and an Academy Dean. The KCRP AKCIECSA is not a traditional career development award; the ECS is expected to conduct research, participate in monthly webinars, and annual workshops and to communicate and collaborate with other members of the Academy (other Early-Career Scholars, mentors, Dean) as well as with the kidney cancer advocacy community.
Eligibility: Faculty with PI eligibility and CE faculty (with an approved CE faculty PI waiver obtained through their RPM in RMG prior to the pre-application/letter of intent) may be the PI. Instructors are eligible, however an Instructor must apply for a Career Development PI waiver 1-2 weeks prior to the Pre-application/Letter of intent deadline. As of the application submission deadline, all eligible PIs must be less than 4 years from their last postdoctoral research position (Ph.D.), clinical fellowship (M.D.). See guidelines for Designated Mentor eligibility.
Not eligible: "Individuals in a postdoctoral research position (Ph.D.), clinical fellowship (M.D.), or equivalent, at the time of the full application submission deadline, are not eligible."

Purpose: The FY23 KCRP Nurse-Initiated Research Award supports innovative, high-impact kidney cancer research, conducted by nurses working in clinical practice and/or an academic environment (DNP or PhD), to advance ideas or clinical care. Proposed research must demonstrate potential to have a major impact in kidney cancer, ideally in a multi-disciplinary manner led by a nurse. Applications are strongly encouraged to address one of the FY23 KCRP Focus Areas or must provide justification that the proposed research addresses a critical problem, question, or need in kidney cancer.
Eligibility: Independent investigators - Faculty with PI eligibility and CE faculty (with an approved CE faculty PI waiver obtained through their RPM in RMG prior to the pre-application/letter of intent) may be PI. Clinical trials may be designed to evaluate promising new products, pharmacologic agents (drugs or biologics), devices, clinical guidance, and/or emerging approaches and technologies. Therapeutic approaches testing existing interventions for new indications in kidney cancer are also encouraged. It is anticipated that outcomes from studies funded by this award will provide scientific rationale for subsequent development of larger, efficacy-based clinical trials of interventions that will transform kidney cancer patient care.
Eligibility: Independent investigators - Faculty with PI eligibility and CE faculty (with an approved CE faculty PI waiver obtained through their RPM in RMG prior to the pre-application/letter of intent) may be PI. An eligible PI must be a licensed registered nurse with a terminal degree of a D.N.P. and/or Ph.D. (or equivalent).
