DoD Breast Cancer Research Program
Breakthrough Awards Levels 1 and 2
Amount of funding - Level 1: $750,000 total costs for applications with a single PI or $1.25 total costs if applying under the Partnering PI Option.
Amount of funding - Level 2: $1.65M total costs for applications with a single PI or $2.5M total costs if applying under the Partnering PI Option.
Amount of funding - Level 2 – Population Science and Prevention Studies: $2.5M total costs for applications with a single PI or $3.35M total costs if applying under the Partnering PI Option.
Purpose: Funding Level 1 - Innovative, high-risk/high-reward research that is in the earliest stages of idea development or is an untested theory that addresses an important problem. To foster research that yields new avenues of investigation, preliminary data are not required. Proof of concept is the anticipated outcome.
Purpose: Funding Level 2 - Research that is already supported by substantial preliminary or published data in breast cancer and strongly validates clinical translation in a well-defined context within the breast cancer landscape.
Eligibility: Faculty with PI eligibility and CE faculty (with an approved CE faculty PI waiver obtained through their RPM in RMG prior to the pre-application/letter of intent) may be the PI or a Partnering PI. Instructors and Senior Postdoctoral Fellows are eligible. Instructors and Senior Postdoctoral fellows must submit and obtain approval for a Career Development PI waiver through their RPMs in RMG prior to submitting a pre-application/letter of intent. Instructors and Postdocs cannot be Partnering PIs.
Not eligible: Clinical Instructors, and academic staff-research (i.e, research associates) are not eligible..
Timeline:
Pre-Application (Letter of Intent) Submission Deadline: June 13, 2025 via eBrap
Please include your RPM’s name as business official in the pre-application.
Institutional representative (RPM/RMG or CGO/OSR) Deadline: June 20, 2025
Application submission Deadline: June 27, 2025 via grants.gov

Breakthrough Award Level 3
Amount of funding: $5.6M total costs for applications with a single PI or $7M total costs if applying under the Partnering PI Option.
Purpose: The intent of the FY25 BCRP Breakthrough Award is to support promising research that has high potential to lead to or make breakthroughs in breast cancer.
Eligibility: Independent investigators - Faculty with PI eligibility and CE faculty (with an approved CE faculty PI waiver obtained through their RPM in RMG prior to the pre-application/letter of intent) may be the PI or a Partnering PI.
Not eligible: Instructors, Clinical Instructors, Academic staff-research (i.e., research associates), and postdocs are not eligible for this RFP because Stanford does not consider them to be independent positions.
Timeline:

Era of Hope Scholar Award
Amount of funding: Total costs budgeted for the entire period of performance will not exceed $4.9M.
Purpose: The FY25 BCRP Era of Hope Scholar Award supports individuals early in their careers who have demonstrated significant potential to effect meaningful change in breast cancer. These individuals should be exceptionally talented scientists who have shown that they are the “best and brightest” in their field(s) through extraordinary creativity, vision, innovation, and productivity. They should have demonstrated experience in forming effective partnerships and collaborations and must exhibit strong potential for future leadership in breast cancer research.
Eligibility: The guidelines indicate “applicants must be an independent investigator within 6 years of their last training position (e.g., postdoctoral fellowship; medical residency; clinical fellowship)" therefore, only Stanford Assistant Professors with PI eligibility and CE Assistant Professors (with an approved CE faculty PI waiver obtained through their RPM prior to the pre-application/letter of intent submission) who are within 6 years of their last training position are eligible.
Not eligible: Instructors, Clinical Instructors, Postdoctoral Fellows, Clinical Fellows, Academic staff-researchers (i.e., research associates) are not eligible because Stanford does not consider them to be independent or faculty-level positions).

Clinical Research Extension Award
Amount of funding: Total costs budgeted for the entire period of performance will not exceed $7M for applications with a single PI or $8.4M if applying under the Partnering PI Option.
Purpose: The FY25 BCRP Clinical Research Extension Award aims to extend or expand the data collection, follow-up, and analysis of breast cancer clinical studies. The intent of this award mechanism is to increase the clinically relevant impact of breast cancer patient participation in clinical research by addressing the knowledge lost due to early trial termination, limited patient follow-up, or suboptimal sample and/or data collection and analysis. Patients’ contributions of tissue, serum, and other biologic specimens and their data are invaluable to saving lives.
Eligibility: Independent investigators - Faculty with PI eligibility and CE faculty (with an approved CE faculty PI waiver obtained through their RPM in RMG prior to the pre-application/letter of intent) may be the Consortium Director or Team PI.
Not eligible: Instructors, Clinical Instructors, Academic staff-research (i.e., research associates), and postdocs are not eligible for this RFP because Stanford does not consider them to be independent positions.
