The Human Microbiome

Welcome to the website of the laboratory of David Relman at the Stanford University School of Medicine, and VA Palo Alto Health Care System. Our investigative program falls within the general themes of host-microbe interactions and human microbial ecology, and is divided into two research areas:

  1. Ecology of the microbial communities indigenous to humans and other mammalian hosts, with a focus on assembly, stability and resilience, as well as sources of variability in patterns of diversity
  2. Classification of humans with systemic infectious diseases, based on features of host genome-wide gene transcript abundance patterns and plasma cell-free DNA and RNA
