Andrea Downing is a patient advocate and security researcher advancing patient-led safeguards for the age of AI. As founder of The Light Collective, she partnered with the Gordon & Betty Moore Foundation to launch the Patient AI Rights Initiative in 2024 — convening nationally recognized advocates and community experts to co-design the first patient-led AI evaluation framework. Her work focuses on building safer, more accountable health technologies rooted in lived experience. Under her leadership, The Light Collective has contributed to the National Academy of Medicine’s AI Code of Conduct and established patient representation within leading health AI governance bodies, including CancerX and the Health AI Partnership.
