Utkan Demirci, PhD
Utkan Demirci, Ph.D., Professor of Radiology (Diagnostics Sciences Laboratory) and, by courtesy, Electrical Engineering, has been elected to the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE) Board of Directors as Chair of the Industry Council. Dr. Demirci’s election to the AIMBE Board reflects his exceptional leadership in medical engineering and his continued contributions to the fields of early cancer detection, microfluidics, and point-of-care diagnostics.
As a member of the AIMBE’s Board of Directors, Dr. Demirci will provide invaluable service to help strengthen the organization’s impact, including advocacy initiatives and engagement across the broader medical and biological engineering community. Dr. Demirci will take office following the 2025 AIMBE Annual Event in Washington, D.C., on March 29-31, 2025.
Dr. Demirci joined the Stanford Medicine Department of Radiology in 2014. Since joining Stanford, Dr. Demirci has held several leadership positions, including co-director and co-division chief of the Canary Center for Cancer Early Detection (2019-2020) and interim division chief and director (2020-2024). His research spans across a range of innovations, including microfluidic platforms for extracellular vesicle analysis, and pioneering microscale cell sorting devices in IVF now used in over 500,000 clinical cases worldwide, virus detection technologies, and portable diagnostics.
In addition, Dr. Demirci also co-leads the NIH R25-funded Canary CREST Program, a 10-week summer training program designed to train the next generation of interdisciplinary scientists in early cancer detection.
Congratulations to Dr. Demirci on this well-deserved honor!
