Dr. Nancy Fischbein Elected 2021-22 President of ASHNR

Nancy J. Fischbein, MD, Professor of Radiology, has been appointed President of the American Society of Head and Neck Radiology (ASHNR) for 2021-2022. She is an internationally recognized neuroradiologist, highly prolific researcher, and award-winning teacher. She holds courtesy appointments at Stanford in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, Neurology and Neurosurgery, and Radiation Oncology departments.

Dr. Fischbein received her B.A. degree (1985), magna cum laude, in Biochemical Sciences from Harvard College and her M.D. degree in 1989 from Harvard Medical School. She completed her residency in diagnostic radiology in 1994, serving as chief resident from 1993-1994, and fellowship in diagnostic neuroradiology in 1996, both at UCSF. She was on the UCSF faculty from 1996 to 2004 prior to joining the Stanford faculty in 2004.

Dr. Fischbein has received numerous awards and served in various leadership roles during her career. In our Department, she was named the Clinician of the Year in 2016 and received an unprecedented number of annual teaching awards in 2014, 2016, 2018, 2020, and 2021. She was the recipient of the 2020 Alwin C. Rambar-James B.D. Mark Award for Excellence in Patient Care at Stanford University Medical Center.

Her leadership and service roles include her appointment as Acting Division Chief of Neuroradiology from 2012-2014, Fellowship Director of Neuroradiology from 2015-2021, and is currently serving as Associate Fellowship Director of Diagnostic Neuroradiology and Associate Division Chief of Neuroimaging & Neurointervention.  She was on the Editorial Board of the American Journal of Neuroradiology from 2000 to 2011 and was Senior Editor for Head and Neck for the American Journal of Neuroradiology, the top academic journal for her field, from 2011 to 2015. Dr. Fischbein is also serving as Treasurer for the American Society of Neuroradiology and as a member of the Board of Trustees for the Foundation of the ASNR.
