On behalf of the Stanford Department of Radiology and Stanford Children’s Health, we are pleased to announce the appointment of Shreyas Vasanawala, MD, PhD, as the new Division Chief, Associate Chair, and Radiologist-in-Chief for Pediatric Radiology. Dr. Vasanawala will begin serving in this position on February 1, 2021.
Dr. Vasanawala, Professor of Radiology at Stanford School of Medicine, currently serves in the Department of Radiology as Chief of the Body MR Division and Medical Director of MRI for the Department.
After completing his undergraduate studies in mathematics at the California Institute of Technology, he pursued a medical degree and doctorate in biophysics at Stanford University, researching signal efficient methods in magnetic resonance imaging. After residency in radiology and fellowship in pediatric radiology, Dr. Vasanawala joined the faculty at Stanford University, where he has focused on building the adult and pediatric body MRI programs, among many other efforts. His multidisciplinary research group has been recognized worldwide for its innovative pediatric imaging methods, including the first routine clinical deployment of high density pediatric-specific MRI receiver coils and the ability to obtain high-resolution pediatric images with much less anesthesia. Dr. Vasanawala serves as PI for multiple NIH R01 and U01 grants, and has 150 peer-reviewed publications and 20 patents.
In his new role, Dr. Vasanawala will provide oversight and leadership for the clinical, teaching, and research activities for the pediatric radiology division based at Stanford Children’s Health, and the pediatric Emergency Department. He will work with leadership and clinical staff at SCH to establish and maintain high standards of excellence in all areas, improve processes to advance the tripartite mission of the institution, build innovative programs that will improve care for children and expectant mothers, advance the field of imaging science, and thus further establish Stanford Radiology’s pre-eminence in the field of pediatric radiology.
We would like to acknowledge and thank Dr. Richard Barth for his many years of dedicated service as division chief since 2003. Under his leadership, the program has grown to a national leader in pediatric radiology care, research, and education.
