Our Impact

We are committed to advancing healthcare research.

At the Quantitative Sciences Unit, our commitment to advancing healthcare research has led to a substantial and far-reaching impact on both the academic and healthcare communities. We have been at the forefront of interdisciplinary collaboration, data-driven insights, and fostering a culture of inclusivity.

Here's how we're making a difference:

Establishing an Internationally Recognized Home for the Practice of Biostatistics

The Quantitative Sciences Unit within the Biostatistics Section embodies a unique partnership model that relies on stellar faculty who practice data science with thriving labs of their own.

The QSU’s advanced data science infrastructure described in Academic Medicine is robust and scalable and can be adopted by other institutions. We are transforming the way academic healthcare institutions are establishing data science units by educating and empowering institutions across the country to build their own similar units, creating a nationwide network of leaders in data science infrastructure. We continue to drive the field of collaborative biostatistics forward through the establishment of best practices.

Founding a Hub for the Practice of Biostatistics at Stanford

As the largest group of biostatisticians on campus, the QSU is central to research across multiple departments and disciplines, providing essential statistical expertise in studies ranging from clinical trials to population health and genetic epidemiology.

The strength of our collaborations relies on our team science principles. Over the years, we have partnered with numerous departments within the School of Medicine, including Neurosurgery, Neurology, Pediatrics, Pathology, and Emergency Medicine, as well as external institutions. These partnerships have allowed us to develop novel tools and technologies while moving the field of medicine forward.

Leading Innovation in Data Science Methods

By developing new data science techniques and applying methods to novel contexts, our team has been able to address complex healthcare challenges. We are not just advancing the scientific community’s understanding of human health, but also transforming the way data science is practiced, and research is conducted, enabling more impactful discoveries

Nurturing Emerging Talent

Recognizing the importance of fostering the current and next generation of clinical and translational scientists – including data and non-data scientists, we have initiated programs tailored to investigators at all stages of their research careers. Our educational programs range from research methods for the clinical investigator to how to drive the science in team settings for the data scientist. We additionally have programs for budding (or curious) data scientists in even earlier stages of life through internship programs developed in partnership with regional institutions.

Including Diverse Perspectives

Our approach is steeped in team science principles. We believe the inclusion of diverse perspectives will elevate the science and ensure its relevance to all communities we intend to serve.
