Unique Curriculum Features

During COVID, outpatient rotations are conducted over telehealth, from home or from office based on resident need and preference
Early outpatient experience (psychiatry, medicine, neurology)
Early psychotherapy training
Scholarly concentration (protected time for independent academic interests including research, community and global work, and educational projects)

Stanford Outpatient Clinics

Opportunity to rotate through various outpatient clinics in 6 month blocks including depression, bipolar, dual diagnosis, women’s wellness, OCD, ECT/TMS, psychosomatic, geriatric, neuropsychiatry clinics.

Palo Alto VA

Locked inpatient psychiatry units; 60 beds
Patient population: Severe mental illness, dual diagnosis. Primarily male patients of all socioeconomic backgrounds from a large catchment area
Highlights: Interdisciplinary rounds, journal club, health provider wellness discussions
Medicine rotations (inpatient, outpatient, consults)

Stanford Hospital

Locked (15 beds) and unlocked (14 beds) inpatient units; Geriatric and Consult Liaison services
High acuity, psychotic and severe mood disorders on locked unit; Lower acuity, eating disorders, personality disorders, pain disorders on unlocked unit
All SES with mix of insurance coverage (commercial, Medicare, Medical, and uninsured)
Highlights: Interdisciplinary rounds, significant legal/forensic experience (in hospital and superior court hearings), ECT treatment

EM and EM Psych rotations

Menlo Park VA

Opportunity to rotate through various outpatient clinics in 6 month blocks including telepsychiatry, serious mental illness clinics, addiction treatment services, trauma-focused psychiatry including evidence-based psychotherapy for combat and violence-related conditions, and residential programs for gender-based sexual trauma and PTSD

Santa Cruz Behavioral Health Division: Crisis stabilization Program and Integrated Behavioral Health for county and homeless populations
Asian Americans for Community Involvement (AACI) Center for Survivors of Torture: Psychiatric evaluation and treatment for political asylum cases and for a primarily immigrant, county population.
Momentum for Mental Health: Largest nonprofit provider for mental health in Santa Clara County; Residents may rotate at this site in San Jose which features a transitional age youth population.
La Clinica de La Raza: Psychiatric clinic with a primarily spanish-speaking immigrant population.

Through the Center for Innovation in Global Health (CIGH) at Stanford and funding opportunities within the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, residents can apply for funding to go abroad. Examples of resident projects are outlined in the image above.

However, many of our patients also come from other California counties in the Central Valley or elsewhere.

Our program’s relationship with multiple different systems of care also allows us to receive broad experience with different insurance systems, from private insurance to public sector care in various counties (in California the behavioral health system is administered by county) to serving patients without insurance, as well as to systems like Kaiser or the VA.
