INSPIRE Clinic

INSPIRE Training

INSPIRE training offers specialized training in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for psychosis (CBTp) and a variety of workshops for clinicians who work with individuals with complex mental health needs. Explore our training site to learn more about what we offer!

Postdoctoral Training

Clinical Psychology Fellowship

Clinical fellows at INSPIRE receive comprehensive professional training.  The core training consists of provision of training in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Psychosis (CBTp), supervised patient care and attending didactics.

Training in CBTp

Fellows will be trained to competence in the delivery of formulation based CBTp. This involves attending live trainings and tape review of sessions with individual feedback. More details about the CBTp training program are available at the INSPIRE Training website.

Patient Care

Supervised by clinical psychologists, fellows learn to work with people experiencing psychosis, from individuals who are at clinically high risk for psychosis (CHRp), through a first episode of psychosis (FEP), to individuals who have dealt with psychosis for longer periods of time. Most service users at our clinic present with multiple challenges, and the fellows will learn how to prioritize treatments based on service user need. There are also opportunities to co-facilitate groups in addition to individual work. While treatment is short-term, there is no session limit or prescribed session-by-session approach, which allows even patients with complex presentations to meet their treatment goals. There may also be opportunities to provide trauma treatments to people experiencing psychosis. The INSPIRE Clinic takes a team-based approach to clinical care, and so fellows are expected to attend the weekly multidisciplinary meeting as well as the weekly psychosocial team meeting to present cases and receive consultation and feedback.

Didactics

Didactics opportunities cover a range of topics that are of interest to providers in the psychosis space, as well as those provided to the broader APA accredited Clinical Psychology Fellowship Program. The latter include ethics and professional development seminars that cover topics relevant to clinical fellows (e.g., paths to licensure, academic job searches), as well as a diversity and inclusion seminar. Fellows can also attend lectures offered in the rich academic environment of the Stanford University campus both within and outside the department.

Fellows are invited to attend monthly trainings through the INSPIRE Master Clinician Series. These are trainings provided by international experts in clinical interventions for individuals with serious mental health difficulties.

Research and Scholarly Opportunities

Clinical fellows are encouraged to participate in research related activities in addition to their clinical training. There are a number of active projects that fellows can participate in.

Additional Stanford University Resources

The INSPIRE clinic is located on the main university campus allowing fellows easy access to the full range of academic and recreational activities offered by the university.  Proximity also allows ease of interaction with the larger group of psychology fellows in the department and at the university at large.

Fellows have access to a wide range of other academic and learning experiences across the university, including full library access.  Additionally, fellows have access to Stanford recreational and cultural activities.

Another resource for fellows is SURPAS, formerly known as SUPD.  SURPAS is the umbrella organization of all postdoctoral scholars at Stanford. SURPAS' mission is to work with university administration in enriching the lives and the career development of postdocs. SURPAS has an extensive website with resources for prospective and current postdocs and international scholars. SURPAS organizes social and academic events.

We also encourage fellows to explore the following diversity focused groups:
