Women in Medicine: Grace Lee, PhD

During September, we proudly feature women in our department for
Women in Medicine Month!

As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

As a child, I wanted to be an astronaut. The wonders of going to space, exploring the unknown, and feeling small amidst a vast universe drew me in..

Share a memorable experience or accomplishment you are proud of in your career. How did it impact your journey?

A memorable and impactful experience during my career was growing my family during my years in graduate school and post-graduate training. I remember feeling pressure to keep my personal/family life and professional journey separate, but this was very difficult! I reflect on these experiences with pride because they pushed me to challenge my previously held beliefs about motherhood and professionalism. These experiences empowered me to bring my whole self into my career pursuit.

What is a challenge you experienced in pursuing a career in medicine?

It is challenging to give myself grace (pun intended) and to not be my own biggest critic. It can be a challenge to let our selves be human while pursuing a career in the medical and mental health field!

What would you tell other women starting to pursue a career in medicine?

I would tell other women starting to pursue their careers that their journey may look different from their colleagues' and even different from the initial plan. Be open to how your own path unfolds! And, doing so alongside other courageous and empowering women can be a meaningful part of the journey.

What are some of the things that inspire you on a day-to-day basis?

I am inspired daily by the brave individuals seeking services through our clinics and by my incredible clinical teams! My partner and our children also inspire me everyday to give my best.

What specific strategies do you use to maintain your own well-being?

I am intentional about gratitude. Some practices I integrate daily include mindful reflecting, journaling, praying, and expressing gratitude to others.
