Women in Medicine: Lauren Schneider, PsyD

During September, we proudly feature members of our department for Women in Medicine Month!

Why did you pursue a career in medicine?

My mother was a nurse and was on the board for a pediatric oncology nonprofit, which showed me early on that a career in medicine could have tremendous impact. From a young age I was interested in helping when one is dealt the challenges of illness.

What is your work focused on?

The intersection of psychology and pediatric chronic illness. My clinical and research work involves pediatric cardiology, heart transplant, and lung transplant.

What is the most fulfilling part of your work?

There are many fulfilling parts of my work. I love the fact that my work is with teams of people who are committed to what they do. Being with a patient shortly after they receive a call that there is a match for an organ never gets old. To be involved in training and to help develop future pediatric psychologists is something I truly love. Helping patients overcome trauma, feel less anxious about medical procedures and as a result more empowered, or feel less depressed so they can accomplish their goals and enjoy life is incredibly fulfilling.

Women in Medicine

We asked some of the #StanfordWIM in our department to share their stories - why they pursued a career in medicine, what their work focuses on, what the most fulfilling parts of their work are, and what advice they would give themselves when they started in the field. Hear what they have to say!
