Women in Medicine: Smita Das, MD, PhD, MPH
During September, we proudly feature women in our department for
Women in Medicine Month!
Share a memorable experience or accomplishment you are proud of in your career. How did it impact your journey?
Something that impacted my journey happened early on in my work in the department. After a few years as a research assistant, in 2003, I was given the opportunity to prepare a poster to present at the Society of Behavioral Medicine under Professor Emeritus, the late Dr. C. Barr Taylor. His mentorship and encouragement helped me win an award for a Best Scientific Poster, but also helped me decide to minor in Statistics at Stanford and set off my research career.
What would you tell other women starting to pursue a career in medicine?
We need more women leaders in medicine-- women bring so many things to the table and can impact everything from individual patient care to providing leadership in an effective and unique manner.

What are some of the things that inspire you in your work?
I am so inspired by all of the women leaders in the department and also by our non-women allies. We are so lucky in Stanford Psychiatry and Medicine to have such inspirational role models who show how wonderful their leadership can be.
Women in Medicine
We asked some of the #StanfordWIM in our department to share their stories - memorable experiences, what advice they would give someone starting in the field, and what inspires them. Read what they have to say! #WomenInMedicine
