Projects

Development of new Imaging Tools in Neoplasia of the GI-Tract, Stanford University (October 1, 2012 - Present)

Modern anti-cancer therapies have extended the survival times for many cancer patients but there is still improvements to be made as cancer mortality rates have, except for a few types of cancer, remained consistently high over the last five decades. By identifying highly sensitive imaging probes for the detection of cancer and its pre-steps we will improve outcomes for patients with the cancer through early detection, guided resection and thereby contribute to the reduction of the morbidity and mortality due to this malignant disease. In future those tools could work as well a therapeutics, which would open a new field - THERANOSTIC.

Current Research and Scholarly Interests

The research interest of myself and my lab are in the field of early cancer detection using targeted molecular spies to highlight (pre)cancerous lesions. We as well aim to improve precision medicine in autoimmune disorders like inflammatory bowel disease and oncology.

The purpose of this study is to determine the safety and feasibility of VGT-309 for the visualization of colorectal tumors in real-time using near-infrared (NIR) fluorescence endoscopy. In addition, signatures of 50+ biomarkers will be evaluated in biopsies using CODEX multi-plexing.

We seek to understand the mechanisms responsible for the resistance of cancers to treatment and to develop strategies to overcome these resistances. We are using molecular and cellular techniques and mouse models to potentiate the activity of radiation on tumors by inhibiting the bone marrow rescue of the tumor vasculature following therapy.

We develop and use the tools of molecular imaging to understand oncogenesis, reveal patterns of cell migration in immunosurveillance, monitor gene expression, visualize stem cell biology, and assess the distribution of pathogens in living animal models of human biology and disease. Biology doesn't occur in "a vacuum" or on coated plates--it occurs in the living body and that's were we look for biological patterns and responses to insult.

Research Interests
The goals of Dr. Galli's laboratory are to understand the regulation of mast cell and basophil development and function, and to develop and use genetic approaches to elucidate the roles of these cells in health and disease. We study both the roles of mast cells, basophils, and IgE in normal physiology and host defense, e.g., in responses to parasites and in enhancing resistance to venoms, and also their roles in pathology, e.g., anaphylaxis, food allergy, and asthma, both in mice and humans.

The laboratory is focused on the relationship between injury, wound healing, and cancer. Esophageal, gastric, and pancreatic cancers are a focus. We are particularly interested in the regulation of cell signaling by EGFR, the EGF receptor. In addition to cancer pathogenesis, active projects include the development of new diagnostic assays and drugs.
