She is a national leader in medical education and coaching and leads our institution-wide coaching initiative to democratize the availability of quality coaching in medical education (COACHME@Stanford: https://med.stanford.edu/content/sm/coachme.html). This program is now available to faculty at Stanford and beyond who seek to integrate the powerful tool of coaching into their impactful roles in medical education. For those seeking coaching certification, this program is an accredited training provider through the Center for Credentialing in Education; successful completion of the full workshop series may be applied towards the requirements to become a board certified coach (https://med.stanford.edu/coachme/coaching-certification-pathway.html). This synchronous virtual course series enhances accessibility while preserving real-time human connection. COACHME@Stanford was developed as Sarah’s strategic initiative with the Stanford Medicine Leadership Academy.
Dr. Williams also leads our Stanford Health Professions Education and Scholarship (SHAPES) Program, Stanford TMA’s medical education certificate program for Stanford faculty and trainees alike. This interdepartmental, intergenerational, and multidisciplinary program addresses multiple foundational topics of importance for educators and is a great professional development program at all career stages. It is designed to be feasible despite busy clinical schedules. https://med.stanford.edu/academy/programs/CTSS_Schedule.html
Within our department, Sarah co-directs our faculty mentorship program, heads our residency's coaching program, and supports our advanced clerkship coaching program. She represents our department as the Specialty Career Advisor for Emergency Medicine at the Stanford University School of Medicine.
Dr. Williams has worn all of the "hats" of residency leadership: Chief Resident, Assistant Program Director (APD), Associate PD, and finally, Program Director. She was our founding Ultrasound Fellowship Director. Sarah has both practical real-world experience in education as well as completing the ACEP Teaching Fellowship and the rigorous Masters Degree in Health Professions Education (MHPE) from the University of Illinois, Chicago. She went to UC Berkeley as an undergraduate and then to Stanford for medical school, residency, and fellowship.
Dr. Williams’ areas of expertise are medical education, professional development, coaching and mentorship, program building, and emergency ultrasound. She understands the challenges of combining an active academic career with family; she is a wife and mom of three sons. She was also the first member of her family to go to college and gets how hard the road can be... Sarah is deeply grateful to all those who have partnered with her to make all this possible and remains commited to paying it forward!
