    Current Research and Scholarly Interests Dr. Bishop specializes in treating fractures of the upper extremity, lower extremity, pelvis and acetabulum as well as the management of post-traumatic problems including malunion, nonunion and infection.

    He received his undergraduate and medical school degrees from Harvard University and went on to complete the Harvard Combined Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Program. He pursued his subspecialty training in Orthopaedic Traumatology at the world-renowned Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, Washington.

    His research interests include applying decision analysis models to orthopaedic trauma problems, studying clinical outcomes after musculoskeletal injury, orthopaedic biomechanics, the basic science of fracture healing, and evaluating new strategies and techniques in fracture surgery.

    Bio Dr. Constance R. Chu is Professor and Vice Chair Research, in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Stanford University. She is also Director of the Joint Preservation Center and Chief of Sports Medicine at the VA Palo Alto. Previously, she was the Albert Ferguson Endowed Chair and Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh. She is a clinician-scientist who is both principal investigator of several projects funded by the National Institutes of Health and who has been recognized as a Castle-Connelly/US News and World Report ?Top Doctor? in Orthopedic Surgery as well as on Becker?s list of Top Knee Surgeons in the United States. Her clinical practice focuses on the knee: primarily restoration and reconstruction of the ACL, menisci and cartilage. She graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and earned her medical degree from Harvard Medical School.

    As Director of the multi-disciplinary Joint Preservation Center structured to seamlessly integrate the latest advances in biologics, mechanics, and imaging with comprehensive patient centered musculoskeletal and orthopedic care, Dr. Chu aims to develop a new model for health care delivery, research and education with an emphasis on health promotion and prevention. Cornerstones of this program include teamwork and a focus on personalized medicine. A central goal is to transform the clinical approach to osteoarthritis from palliation to prevention. In addition to optimizing clinical operations, outstanding research is critical to developing more effective new treatments. Towards this end, Dr. Chu is leading innovative translational research from bench to bedside in three main areas: quantitative imaging and biomarker development for early diagnosis and staging of joint and cartilage injury and degeneration; cartilage tissue engineering and stem cell based cartilage repair; and molecular and biological therapies for joint restoration and joint rejuvenation. Her research efforts have led to more than 30 professional awards and honors to include a Kappa Delta Award, considered to be the highest research honor in Orthopedic Surgery.

    Dr. Chu also regularly holds leadership and committee positions in major professional organizations such as the American Association of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS) and the American Orthopedic Association (AOA). In her subspecialty of Orthopedic Sports Medicine, she is a past President of the Forum Sports Focus Group, a member of the Herodicus Society of leaders in Sports Medicine, and immediate past Chair of the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM) Research Council. She is alumnus of the AOA American, British, Canadian (ABC) and the AOSSM Traveling Fellowships.

    Current Research and Scholarly Interests Dr. Costouros has devoted his entire career to mastering the comprehensive treatment of shoulder disorders. He specializes in the arthroscopic and open treatment of shoulder disorders derived from sports injuries, arthritis, fractures, compressive neuropathies, and failed prior surgeries. He has made significant award-winning research discoveries in the molecular etiology and treatment of arthritis and cartilage injuries.

    He has special expertise in the reverse total shoulder replacement, management of complex rotator cuff tears, revision surgery, tendon transfers, fractures of the shoulder girdle including the proximal humerus and clavicle, and the treatment of sports-related disorders and instability of the shoulder in overhead athletes using arthroscopic techniques.

    His research focuses on improving our understanding of cartilage injury and arthritis at the cellular level, specifically the development of methods to modulate programmed cell death or apoptosis. He also is involved in the development of cell-based strategies in improving outcomes following rotator cuff repair and better understanding the causes of rotator cuff disease.

    Dr. Costouros has designed and continues to develop shoulder joint replacement devices and tools for improved precision and surgical navigation which will enhance clinical outcomes following shoulder arthroplasty and longevity of these devices. In addition, he continues to be interested in the development of instruments to analyze surgical outcomes and the creation of registries which allow surgeons to better understand patient-specific outcomes, implant longevity, wear mechanisms, and how surgeons can consistently deliver the best results following shoulder surgery.

    Bio Dr. Donahue is a Board Certified Orthopaedic Surgeon with Subspecialty Certification in Orthopaedic Sports Medicine. He is fellowship trained and specializes in Arthroscopic and Minimally Invasive Reconstructive Surgery of the Shoulder and Knee, and Sports Medicine.

    Dr. Donahue received his undergraduate degree from Stanford University and his Doctor of Medicine from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. He completed his residency in Orthopedic Surgery at St. Luke?s-Roosevelt Hospital Center (NYC), Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (NYC), and the Alfred I. duPont Institute (DE), and went on to a fellowship in Orthopedic Sports Medicine at the Stanford/SOAR Sports Medicine Fellowship Program.

    Dr. Donahue?s interests include arthroscopic surgery of the shoulder and knee. He specializes in anterior cruciate ligament injuries, shoulder instability, and rotator cuff tears. He has done research on both shoulder instability and rotator cuff tears and has developed new techniques and medical devices for rotator cuff and all soft tissue repairs. He has started and actively serves on the medical advisory board for several surgical device companies and continues to design new surgical devices for arthroscopic procedures. He has authored several device patents and journal articles.

    Dr. Donahue has been a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and a Diplomat of the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery. He is also member of the Arthroscopy Association of North America, the American Orthopedic Society of Sports Medicine, the California Orthopedic Association, The International Knee Society, the California Medical Association, and the Santa Clara Medical Society.

    Dr. Donahue has served as the Program Director of the SOAR Orthopedic Sports Medicine Fellowship Program. He has served as the Director of Santa Clara University?s Sports Medicine Program and the Head Team Physician for all of Santa Clara University?s athletic teams, a team physician for the San Francisco 49ers, the San Francisco Giants, the Stanford Athletic Department, and many other area collegiate and high school teams.

    Current Research and Scholarly Interests Dr. Gary Fanton is the Chief of the Section of Sports Medicine at Stanford’s Department of Orthopedic Surgery. His practice primarily involves the diagnostic evaluation and treatment of sports and trauma-related injuries of the upper extremity, knee, and ankle. He is Board Certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery and is currently the Team Physician in Orthopedics for the San Francisco 49ers. Dr. Fanton's past experience includes positions as team orthopedist for the San Francisco Giants, company physician for the San Jose Ballet, head team orthopedist for Stanford University football and basketball, and team orthopedist for Stanford’s additional 29 varsity sports. He co-founded the SOAR clinic where he was an active partner in private practice since 1983. He holds a B.S. degree from the University of Michigan and M.D. degree from the Medical College of Wisconsin.

    Dr. Fanton's special interests include arthroscopic surgery of the knee and shoulder...specifically, injuries to the anterior cruciate ligament of the knee, cartilage injuries, rotator cuff tears, and shoulder instability. He has done extensive research on knee ligament tears, explored new techniques for shoulder stabilization and tendon repair, and he utilizes state-of-the-art surgical procedures to enhance rehabilitation and recovery after surgery. He is frequently asked to be a guest lecturer both nationally and internationally on these and other sports-medicine related topics. He has also authored dozens of articles on sports injuries and new surgical techniques.

    Dr. Fanton was a co-founder and board member of Oratec Interventions, a medical device start-up for minimally invasive spine and joint procedures that went public in April, 2000, which was subsequently purchased by Smith-Nephew in 2002. He actively serves on the medical advisory board for several public and private surgical device companies in the Orthopedic industry and he continues to design and develop unique surgical devices for minimally invasive surgery. He has co-authored several device patents and has several others pending.

    Dr. Fanton has been a member in good standing with the American Academy of Orthopedic surgeons since 1985 and he is a Diplomat of the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery. He is also member of the Orthopedic Research Society, NFL Team Physicians Society, the American Orthopedic Society of Sports Medicine, The International Knee Society, International Cartilage Repair Society, and a founding member of the International Musculoskeletal Laser Society.

    Current Research and Scholarly Interests Dr. Gardner?s investigative program during his academic career has involved a two-pronged approach, including both clinical and basic research. Prior to joining the Orthopaedic Department at Stanford, he was the Director of the Orthopaedic Trauma Research Program at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, MO. During his tenure as Director, he organized a highly productive and efficient research program. This resulted in publication of many scientific manuscripts, and numerous ongoing multicenter and single center trials that remain active.

    Throughout his career, he has published over 100 peer-reviewed original scientific manuscripts, in addition to over 50 invited manuscripts, brief reports, and review papers. He has edited two published text books, is currently editing two more books, and has co-authored over 30 book chapters. His goals include continuing to be highly active in both clinical and basic research, and to continue attaining grant funding to support this work.

    Bio Steven S. Isono, M.D. is a Board Certified Orthopaedic Surgeon who specializes in Sports Medicine as well as surgery of the knee and the shoulder.
    He attended Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts concentrating in Biochemical Sciences and wrote a Thesis on Sickle Cell Anemia. He then attended medical school at Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois, continued research investigating Liver Hepatomas and received his M.D. degree in 1982. The next five years included studying Microsurgery in Japan at the Kyoto University Hospital and the Tokyo Metropolitan Hospital as well as completing both his Internship in General Surgery and Residency in Orthopedic Surgery at the Stanford University Medical Center in 1987.

    Dr. Isono received his initial Board Certification in Orthopaedic Surgery in 1989 and has been re-certified in 1999, 2009 and 2018. Steve also received a Certificate of Added Qualification (CAQ) in Sports Medicine in the inaugural class of 2007 and was re-certified in 2017. He is a member of many professional societies including the Association of NBA Team Physicians, The Olympic Sports Medicine Society, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, The American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, the American Orthopaedic Society of Sports Medicine, the Arthroscopy Association of North America, the California Orthopaedic Association, the Western Orthopaedic Association, and the American College of Sports Medicine,

    Steve is currently serving as a Team Physician for the Golden State Warriors of the National Basketball Association, United States Olympic Committee (USA Men's Swimming, Triathlon, Judo, Taekwondo, and Track and Field, Rowing and Boxing), and for Laney College. He is also a Consultant for the Ironman World Triathlon Championships, the Dew Tour of Action Sports, and the Association of Volleyball Professionals. Steve has also served as a Team Physician for the World Games of the Special Olympics, the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto, Canada, the XXXI Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 2016, the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aries, Argentina in 2018, and will be attending the 2019 Pan American Games in Lima, Peru.

    Bio Dr. Kleimeyer specializes in orthopaedic spine surgery, treating cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine disorders including disc herniations, stenosis, myelopathy, fractures, scoliosis and more. Prior to coming to the Stanford Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and the Stanford Spine Center, Dr. Kleimeyer completed his residency in orthopaedic surgery at Stanford University where he was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha honor society. He then completed his spine fellowship at the renowned Emory University Spine Center.

    Dr. Kleimeyer has received honors and recognition for his research in the fields of orthopaedic surgery and spine surgery. He participates in national and international specialty societies and as a journal reviewer. His research interests include improving clinical outcomes of surgical and nonsurgical care, the genetics of orthopaedic and spine disorders, and cost efficacy. Dr. Kleimeyer has published over 20 journal articles in addition to other reviews and textbook chapters.

    Bio Dr. Emily Kraus is a Clinical Assistant Professor at Stanford Children?s Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Center. She specializes in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) sports medicine and takes a unique approach to the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of sports injuries in athletes of all ages. She is involved in multiple Stanford IRB-approved research projects, including The Healthy Runner Project, a multicenter prospective interventional study focused on bone stress injury prevention in collegiate middle and long distance runners.

    Dr. Kraus also spends time performing gait analysis at the Stanford Run Safe Injury Prevention Program and serves as a medical advisors for the Adaptive Sports Injury Prevention Program at the Palo Alto VA. She has research and clinical interests in endurance sports medicine, injury prevention, running biomechanics, the prevention of bone stress injuries in collegiate athletes and the promotion of health and wellness at any age of life.

    She has completed seven marathons including Boston Marathon twice and one 50k ultramarathon. With running and staying physically active as one of her personal passions, she recognizes the importance of fitness for overall wellbeing and the prevention of chronic medical conditions.

    Bio Andrea Kussman, MD is a board-certified Family Medicine physician with a Certificate of Added Qualification (CAQ) in Sports Medicine. She is faculty in the Department of Orthopaedics, where she specializes in the non-surgical treatment of orthopedic injuries, management of medical issues in athletes, and Primary Care.

    Dr. Kussman earned her MD from the University of Michigan Medical School, and completed her Family Medicine Residency at UCLA. After residency she was selected to be the Chief Resident at UCLA. Dr. Kussman then completed her Sports Medicine Fellowship at UCLA, where she served as a Team Physician for UCLA Intercollegiate Athletics and for Santa Monica High School.

    Dr. Kussman cares for Stanford University athletes at the Lacob Family Sports Medicine Clinic in the Arrillaga Center for Sports and Recreation, and is the Head Team Physician for Stanford University Women's Volleyball, Beach Volleyball, Lacrosse, Softball, Synchronized Swimming, Men's Crew, Women's Crew, and Lightweight Crew. Dr. Kussman also enjoys caring for members of the community at her Redwood City Orthopaedic Clinic, where she sees patients of all ages. From weekend warriors to competitive athletes, Dr. Kussman enjoys helping her patients recover, return to their activities, and meet their goals.

    Dr. Kussman provides teaching to the Stanford University Sports Medicine Fellowship Program. She is a member of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM), the American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM), and the Female Athlete Triad Coalition.

    In her spare time, Dr. Kussman enjoys camping, hiking, running, playing soccer, watching sports, trying out new sports, reading, and spending time with her husband and their puppy.
