    Bio Chelsea Ma, M.D. is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Dermatology. Dr. Ma received a Bachelor of Arts degree in human biology from Stanford University. She attended medical school at the University of California Davis, and internship at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Harvard Medical School. She completed her dermatology residency at University of California Davis, serving as Chief Resident her final year. She completed a clinical research fellowship, focusing on neutrophilic dermatoses, blistering diseases, melanoma, eczema and psoriasis. Her clinical interests include general dermatology and complex medical dermatology.

    Current Research and Scholarly Interests Our lab aims to understand the biomechanics that govern a wide spectrum of congenital heart defects, and how those biomechanics change with contemporary operative repair strategies. We simulate operations virtually via CFD, and in ex vivo and in vivo animal models, and analyze how the changes we make alter fluid flow, pressure, and stresses throughout the system. We hope that these experiments can impact and optimize existing techniques that translate quickly to the operating room.

    Bio Dr David M. Maahs is Professor of Pediatrics and Division Chief of Pediatric Endocrinology at Stanford University and the Lucile Packard Children?s Hospital. He earned his MD followed by Pediatric Residency at the University of New Mexico. After 3 years on New Mexico?s faculty, Dr. Maahs completed a Pediatric Endocrinology fellowship and a concurrent PhD in Epidemiology at the University of Colorado. He remained on Colorado?s faculty for 10 years, advancing to Professor of Pediatrics before moving to Stanford. Prior to his medical career, Dr. Maahs received a BA and MA in English from the University of Kansas and was inspired to pursue a medical career after serving in the Peace Corps with assignments in Tunisia and the Central African Republic.

    Dr. Maahs? leadership experiences include being a past co-Chair (2013-16) for Protocols and Publications with the Type 1 Diabetes Exchange for which he continues as a Steering Committee member and Director of International Collaborations. This complements his role as Secretary-General for the International Society of Pediatric and Adolescent Diabetes (ISPAD, 2016-20) and Editor-in-Chief for the 2018 ISPAD Clinical Practice Consensus Guidelines. He currently serves on the Professional Practice Committee for the American Diabetes Association (ADA, 2016-18), which writes the annual ADA Standards of Care. Previously, he served on the ADA Scientific Sessions committee representing the Council on Youth. He has also served on national committees for the American Heart Association, the Pediatric Endocrine Society, and multiple journal editorial boards and review committees.

    His scholarly interest is improving care and preventing complications in people with type 1 diabetes (T1D). Along with Dr Peter Chase, he is author of the 12th and 13th editions of Understanding Diabetes, or ?Pink Panther,? which are the most widely used educational books for children newly diagnosed with T1D, distributed internationally by the Juvenile Diabetes Research Fund (JDRF). More specifically, he has conducted epidemiologic studies that help generate hypotheses for clinical studies, including trials to develop artificial pancreas systems to improve glucose control, lower disease burden, and prevent diabetic complications. He is author or co-author of over 300 research publications. His multi-disciplinary research has been funded by the JDRF, the National Institutes of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), the Helmsley Charitable Trust, and the National Science Foundation (NSF).

    Dr Maahs is Associate Director for the recently formed and NIDDK P30 funded Stanford University Diabetes Research Center (https://sdrc.stanford.edu). His collaborations extend to his role as Principal Investigator (PI) or steering committee member for NIH funded multi-center clinical trials including the FLEX, PERL, and ACTION studies as well as multiple Artificial Pancreas clinical trials. Education, mentorship, and training leadership includes being Program Director with Dr. Georgeanna Klingensmith on the Barbara Davis Center T32 and K12 training grants in Pediatric Endocrinology while at the University of Colorado. He is the PI on the Stanford NIH funded K12 "Training Research Leaders in Type 1 Diabetes.'

    While in the Peace Corps, David met his wife, Christine Walravens, who is also a Pediatrician at Stanford. They enjoy outdoor activities and traveling with their children, Nicholas (22) and Natalia (16).

    Current Research and Scholarly Interests Recent clinical studies, by us and others, have demonstrated that T cell based immunotherapy can eradicate cancers resistant to all other available therapies. Our program creates, develops and optimizes genetically engineered T cells to treat cancer. We link the bench with the bedside, developing novel therapies for early phase testing in clinical trials, while simultaneously conducting intensive studies on clinical samples obtained from patients treated on immunotherapy trials.

    Current Research and Scholarly Interests Our laboratory is interested in the function and plasticity CNS synapses, including studies of the detailed structure and protein content of synapses in different plastic states. We also have a strong interest in the pathophysiology of Azheimer?s disease as related to endocannabinoids. We use primarily electrophysiogy and high-resolution array tomographic imaging to dissect the function of synapses undergoing changes due either to external stimuli, disease states or internal modulation.

He trained in General Surgery at Brown University and obtained advanced training in Adult Surgical Critical Care and Trauma at the University of Michigan. He holds a Masters of Business Administration from the University of Michigan and is triple board certified in General Surgery, Critical Care, and Medical Informatics. In addition to being a clinician and surgeon, Dr. Maggio participates in the National Committee on Healthcare Engineering for the American College of Surgeons, and his research interests are focused on the delivery of high-value care.

    Research Focus:

    My primary research interest is the design and conduct of multicenter clinical trials and analyses of important clinical cardiac issues using large patient databases. My research focuses on novel anticoagulation agents for the treatment of acute coronary syndromes and atrial fibrillation, the study of agents targeted to protect the myocardium during reperfusion therapy for acute myocardial infarction, and the evaluation of cardiovascular safety of diabetic therapies. I am also interested in the methodology of clinical trials. Current research activities include standardization of the definition of myocardial infarction used in clinical trials, the adjudication of suspected clinical endpoint events by Clinical Event Committees (CEC), and the efficient operational conduct of large multinational clinical trials.

    Bio Dr. Anurag Mairal is an Adjunct Professor of Medicine and the Director, Global Outreach Programs at Stanford Byers Center for Biodesign, Stanford University. He is also an Adjunct Professor at Stanford's Graduate School of Business and a Faculty Fellow and Lead for Technology Innovation and Impact at Center for Innovation in Global Health. In these roles, he leads initiatives focused on applying the biodesign process to resource-constrained settings globally. Further, he facilitates opportunities for students, faculty and fellows at Stanford to work on global healthcare needs. He is part of the founding faculty team for MED 232, Global Health: Scaling Health Technology Innovations in Low Resource Settings and BIOE 371, Global Biodesign: Medical Technology in an International Context, graduate-level courses offered to engineering, business, and medical students at Stanford University. Earlier, he served as Associate Director for the Stanford-India Biodesign and Singapore-Stanford Biodesign programs. He serves as the Founding Chair of BME IDEA APAC, a community of medtech innovation programs in Asia Pacific, partnering closely with the industry and academia in the region. He is also an Honorary Professor at University of Cape Town, South Africa. Concurrently, he is a co-founder and Executive Vice President of Orbees Medical, a SF Bay Area-based strategy consulting firm serving global healthcare industry, with a focus on medtech, pharmaceutical, and digital health industry. 

    Dr. Mairal has an extensive background in medical technology development and commercialization, collaborating with partners in the U.S., India, China, and other emerging markets to advance product development, manufacturing, and distribution. Recently, he took a sabbatical for two years to take a senior leadership role at PATH, a major global health nonprofit based in Seattle. In this role, he oversaw research and development, commercialization, and implementation of technologies in PATH?s medical devices, diagnostics, and digital health divisions. Previously, he held several positions at Johnson & Johnson, including Business Development Director and Product Director for structural heart, cardiology, and peripheral vascular products at Cordis. Before joining J&J, he was a Group Leader and a Process Development Manager at Membrane Technology and Research (MTR). At MTR, he was responsible for business development, strategic alliances, and product development in the bioseparations area. An active mentor to entrepreneurs and industry professionals, he serves as the chair of PATH?s Bay Area Leadership Council, board member at EPPIC Global Network and IIT Bombay Heritage Foundation and advisory board member at D-Rev and Sewa International.

    Dr. Mairal earned a PhD in chemical engineering from the University of Colorado at Boulder and an MBA from the Haas School of Business at the University of California at Berkeley. He also holds an MS in chemical engineering from the Indian Institution of Technology in Mumbai and a BS in chemical engineering from National Institute of Technology, Raipur. Dr. Mairal was a post-doctoral fellow at the University of Twente, Netherlands and at University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. At BerkeleyHaas, he was a founding co-Chairman of the South Asia Business Conference and Chair of the Biotech Panel for the Asia Business Conference. His work has been published in more than 30 publications, and he has seven issued patents.

    Current Research and Scholarly Interests The Majeti lab focuses on the molecular/genomic characterization and therapeutic targeting of leukemia stem cells in human hematologic malignancies, particularly acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Our lab uses experimental hematology methods, stem cell assays, genome editing, and bioinformatics to define and investigate drivers of leukemia stem cell behavior. As part of these studies, we have led the development and application of robust xenotransplantation assays for human hematopoietic cells.

    Bio Robbie Majzner is an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Hematology and Oncology. After graduating with a BA from Columbia University, Dr. Majzner attended Harvard Medical School, where he developed an interest in pediatric oncology. He completed his residency training in pediatrics at New York Presbyterian-Columbia and fellowship training in pediatric hematology-oncology at Johns Hopkins and the National Cancer Institute. During his fellowship, he cared for some of the first pediatric patients to receive CD19 chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cells, children with B cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL) who often had no other therapeutic option. Witnessing the success of CAR T cells in these patients drove Dr. Majzner to the laboratory, where he focuses on extending the use of CAR T cells to solid tumors. He has generated and optimized novel receptors to recognize antigens over-expressed on pediatric solid tumors such as GD2 (Mount/Majzner et al., Nature Medicine, 2018) B7-H3 (Majzner et al., Clinical Cancer Research, 2019), and ALK (Walker/Majzner et al., Molecular Therapy, 2017). Current work focuses on imparting multi-specificity to CAR T cells and optimizing these receptors to enhance their efficacy when the amount of target (antigen density) is limiting (Majzner et al., Cancer Discovery, 2020). By drawing on state of the art bioengineering techniques, the Majzner Laboratory focuses on enhancing the potency and specificity of CAR T cells for children with cancer.

    Clinically, Dr. Majzner cares for all patients with neuroblastoma at the Lucile Packard Children's Hospital and has a specific interest in bringing novel immunotherapies to clinical trials for these patients and those with other solid tumors. He is board certified in pediatrics and pediatric hematology-oncology.

    Current Research and Scholarly Interests Dr. Josh Makower serves on the faculty of the Stanford University Medical School as an Adjunct Professor of Medicine and is Co-Founder of Stanford?s Biodesign Innovation Program (now called the Byers Center for Biodesign). Josh helped create the fundamental structure of the Center?s core curriculum and is the chief architect of what is now called ?The Biodesign Process.? Over the past 18 years since Josh and Dr. Paul Yock founded the Stanford Biodesign Innovation Program, this curriculum and the associated textbook has been used at Stanford and across the world to train thousands of students, faculty and industry leaders on the biodesign process towards the advancement of medical innovation for the improvement of patient care. Josh has practiced these same techniques directly as the Founder & Executive Chairman of ExploraMed, a medical device incubator, creating 8 companies since 1995. Transactions from the ExploraMed portfolio include NeoTract, acquired by Teleflex, Acclarent, acquired by J&J, EndoMatrix, acquired by C.R. Bard & TransVascular, acquired by Medtronic. Other ExploraMed/NEA ventures include Moximed, Nuelle and Willow. Josh is currently also working with NEA where he is a General Partner on their healthcare team leading the medtech/healthtech practice. Josh serves on the board of Setpoint Medical, DOTS Technologies, Eargo, ExploraMed, Intrinsic Therapeutics, Moximed, Willow and Coravin. Josh holds over 300 patents and patent applications.     Current Research and Scholarly Interests My research focuses on epidemiologic aspects of viral vaccines and perinatal HIV infection. This includes the molecular epidemiology of factors affecting the immunogenicity of oral polio vaccine (OPV) in developing areas of the world, and now the epidemiology of transmission and circulation of vaccine derived polioviruses in order to assist in global eradication of polio. I also work in development of methods to prevent breastfeeding transmission of HIV in Africa.

    Current Research and Scholarly Interests Dr. Maloney is nationally and internationally recognized for his contributions to the improved understanding of the causes of failure of surgical joint replacement. For example; he established a critical link between polyethylene wear debris and bony erosion, with resulting significant changes in the materials and design strategies of joint replacement surgery. More recently, he has shown that wear debris particles are coated in vivo with human proteins, such as albumin; this observation has notably improved the validity of in vitro investigation in this area. His research in the area of joint replacement has twice won awards from the Hip Society. Dr. Maloney is currently the President of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and has served on numerous AAOS committees, including the Council on Education. Previously, he was chair of the American Joint Replacement Registry Board of Directors (AJRR), and on the board of directors for the Knee Society, the Hip Society, the Western Orthopaedic Association, and the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons (AAHKS). Dr. Maloney is a past president of the Hip Society. He has been a Visiting Professor to numerous universities and institutions throughout the United States and Asia.

    Bio Janice Man, MD, is currently a Clinical Assistant Professor for the Department of Anesthesia, Perioperative and Pain Medicine at Stanford University and is board-certified in anesthesiology and pediatric anesthesiology. She completed her medical school education at the Yale University School of Medicine, residency training at UCSF, pediatric anesthesia fellowship training at CHOP, and her pediatric regional anesthesia fellowship at Stanford. She received the Outstanding Research Award in Acute Pain at the Society of Pediatric Pain Medicine Annual Conference in 2016. Her interests include utilization of regional anesthesia and comprehensive multimodal analgesic protocols in the reduction of opioid consumption for acute pain in pediatric patients.

    Bio Edward E. Manche, MD is Professor of Ophthalmology and Director of the Cornea and Refractive Surgery Service at Stanford University School of Medicine. He received his medical degree from Albert Einstein College of Medicine and completed residency training at the University of Medicine and Dentistry at New Jersey where he served as Chief Resident. He completed a two-year fellowship in Cornea and Refractive Surgery at the Jules Stein Eye Institute at UCLA.

    Dr. Manche is a fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and received its Achievement Award in 2003 and its Senior Achievement Award in 2014. He was elected to active membership in the American Ophthalmological Society in 2011, and is recognized in Best Doctors in America and Guide to America's Top Physicians. He serves on the editorial boards of the American Journal of Ophthalmology, Journal of Ophthalmology, Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology and Journal of Refractive Surgery.

    He lectures widely on topics in cornea and refractive surgery and has published over 115 peer-reviewed articles and 25 book chapters.

    Current Research and Scholarly Interests My clinical research interests include the development of techniques and patient care pathways to improve postoperative pain control and other surgical outcomes for patients of all ages. I am particularly interested in using regional anesthesiology, the science and practice of modulating nerve transmission in the central neuraxis or within peripheral nerves, to produce target-specific and opioid-sparing pain relief and enhance recovery after surgery or injury.

    Current Research and Scholarly Interests The Marinkovich lab studies the function of epithelial extracellular matrix molecules, including integrins, collagens and laminins in epithelial development and carcinoma progression. We apply our discoveries in this area towards development of molecular therapies for carcinomas, hair disease and inherited epithelial adhesive disorders.

    Bio Dr. Mark received his medical degree from the University of Kansas and completed his residency in pediatrics at Children?s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri. He then completed a fellowship in pediatric pulmonary medicine at the University of Rochester, Rochester, New York. In 1999, Dr. Mark completed the first fellowship in Pediatric Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona. He practices at Packard Children?s Hospital where he utilizes non-conventional approaches with patients who have chronic illnesses such asthma and cystic fibrosis. He is interested in nutrition and the mind/body approach to healing in an effort to decrease dependence on medication.

    Dr. Mark is the Program Director for the Pediatric Pulmonary fellowship program, Associate Director for the Pediatric residency program and the Medical Director for the Coordinating and Optimizing Resources Effectively (CORE) Program at Packard Children?s Hospital, Stanford University. This innovative program assists with care coordination and communication with all health care providers for children with complex medical needs.

    Bio Dr. Marks received an Honors Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Marquette University and his Medical Degree from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He completed his neurology residency and fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). Dr. Marks also holds a Master of Science in Health Care Management degree from the Harvard School of Public Health.

    Dr. Marks is Board Certified in Neurology and Clinical Neurophysiology. Prior to joining the Stanford Faculty, he served as Professor of Neurology at UCSF. His clinical and research interests include movement disorders, epilepsy, neuromodulation, health technology, and health care policy.

    Dr. Marks also serves as Head of Clinical Neurology at Verily Life Sciences, formerly Google Life Sciences?a translational research and engineering organization focused on improving healthcare by applying scientific and technological advances to significant problems in health and biology. At Verily, Dr. Marks is responsible for developing and implementing strategies and initiatives that will advance the understanding of neurological disorders to ultimately improve patient outcomes.

    Current Research and Scholarly Interests Dr. Maron is the Co-Chair and Principal Investigator of the ISCHEMIA trial, and Co-Chair of the ISCHEMIA-CKD trial. These large, international, NIH-funded studies will determine whether an initial invasive strategy of cardiac catheterization and revascularization plus optimal medical therapy will reduce cardiovascular events in patients with and without chronic kidney disease and at least moderate ischemia compared to an initial conservative strategy of optimal medical therapy alone.

    I do have an entrepreneur profile, with easy adaptation to new business and processes and resilience to adverse situations. I have extensive experience in the development of new leadership and constantly seek innovation in processes and technologies.

    Recent honors/awards include ?2017 - Most Influential and Innovative CIO? in the private sector by SUCESU-PR, a non-profit association representing IT users in the state of Parana, and finalist of ?2017 IT Executive of the Year? award, in the category health, by IT Media (SP), a social media channel focused on high-level IT executives.

    I have 12 years? experience as an entrepreneur in my first company (DATRAN), which was acquired in 2002 by MSA Infor (Magnesite Group), where I further had executive functions for one year.

    From Jul/2008 to Dec/2009 I worked as Director of Commercial Planning at Paraná Bank, planning and overseeing the performance of banking products, development and implementation of performance metrics, and policy definition in the consigned credit product for the bank?s commercial area.

    In 2009 I returned to academia at the main private university in the state of Parana (Pontifical Catholic University- PUCPR), where I performed a variety of leadership and teaching roles, while simultaneously pursuing further post-graduate research experience. From Dec/2009 to Dec/2011 I was the director of educational technologies.

    After successfully restructuring the department, I was invited to lead PUCPR´s campus in Maringá, including a complex relocation, position held until Jul/2013, when I accepted the role of leading the implementation of Oracle Peoplesoft Campus Solutions at PUCPR?s main campus in Curitiba.

    In Aug/2014, I was assigned as director of the Technology and Systems area, as CIO of the whole Marist Group, primarily overseeing all technology needs for the group?s businesses, including 2 higher education institutions with 6 campuses, 19 schools, 23 social units, and 2 hospitals.

    In Jul/2018 I changed my position as executive director of TECPUC (a technical school with 2.200 students), and of PUCPR Online, responsible for creating and executing online courses, departing from 10 courses in 2018 to more than 30 in 2019.

    In Jan/2020 I started a year of research as a visiting associate professor at the Stanford University School of Medicine. This research project aims to analyze quality metrics of telemedicine service at Stanford Hospitals pre and post COVID-19.

    Current Research and Scholarly Interests The Cardiovascular Biomechanics Computation Lab at Stanford develops novel computational methods for the study of cardiovascular disease progression, surgical methods, and medical devices. We have a particular interest in pediatric cardiology, and use virtual surgery to design novel surgical concepts for children born with heart defects.

    Bio Dr. Martella is a fellowship-trained radiation oncologist and a clinical assistant professor of radiation oncology at Stanford University School of Medicine.

    His clinical interests include gynecologic, breast, thoracic, gastrointestinal, genitourinary, and central nervous system cancers. His experience encompasses the full range of radiotherapy techniques, including intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT), stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT), CyberKnife radiosurgery, eye plaque brachytherapy, and prostate and gynecologic high dose rate (HDR) brachytherapy.

    Dr. Martella is dedicated to improving the quality of care and the patient experience. He deeply values a close relationship with his patients and their loved ones. He feels that each patient experiences healthcare in a unique and individual way. By recognizing and responding to those individual needs Dr. Martella provides a truly patient-centered experience. He has helped conduct research into noninvasive deep brain stimulation and chromosomal topography,and published on the topic of treating rectal cancer without radiation. He also was the primary contributing author of chapters in the book First Aid for the United States Medical Licensing Examination.

    Dr. Martella has delivered presentations at the Annual Meeting of the American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology. Topics include chemotherapy and radiotherapy in endometrial cancer.

    Among the honors for scholarship that Dr. Martella has received, he graduated first in his class at Duke University School of Medicine. He was also elected during medical school into Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society.

    Dr. Martella?s community service has included a position on the board of directors of Camp Good Days and Special Times, a nonprofit organization that provides services for children who have cancer, have a parent or sibling with cancer, or have lost a parent or sibling to the disease. He has served on several leadership roles and has a deep dedication to furthering diversity and inclusion throughout the healthcare system.

    Bio Payam Massaband received his Bachelors degree in Neuroscience at UCLA in 1998 and MD degree at USC in 2002. Dr. Massaband has been a staff radiologist at the VA Palo Alto since graduating from Radiology residency and fellowship at Stanford in 2010. Dr. Massaband concentrated on imaging of the cardiovascular and musculoskeletal organ systems in fellowship. As chief of the Radiology Service at VA Palo Alto since 2012, he has concentrated on clinical excellence, process improvement and residency education. Dr. Massaband was named the Stanford Radiology Residency Program Director in 2015.

    Current Research and Scholarly Interests My work is focused in investigating mechanisms of endocrine resistance in ER-positive breast cancer and novel clinical trial designs of combined ER and targeted therapeutics. Primary areas of investigation are in metastatic disease and preoperative clinical trials.
    Additional areas of interest include breast cancer in young women, in men, and breast cancer diagnosed during pregnancy.
