Bio Robert W. Hsieh, M.D. Ph.D. is a medical oncologist who specializes in the treatment of prostate cancer, bladder cancer, kidney (renal) cancer and testicular cancer as a member of Stanford's multi-disciplinary Urologic Cancer Program. Dr. Hsieh obtained his M.D. and Ph.D. degrees at the University of Chicago (Pritzker School of Medicine) and subsequently came to Stanford to complete his Internal Medicine residency and Hematology and Oncology fellowship training (with a clinical focus on genitourinary cancers).
Dr. Hsieh has also had extensive experience in basic lab research (cancer stem cells, target identification and validation, pre-clinical drug discovery) having done post-doctoral work in the Clarke Lab in the Institute for Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine. He is currently involved in early phase clinical trials in immuno-oncology in industry.

Bio Dr. Hu is Medical Director of the Acute Psychiatric Inpatient Unit at Stanford Hospital, specializing in the care of those with serious mental illnesses, including schizophrenia, bipolar and depression. She completed medical school and residency in psychiatry at the University of California, San Francisco, and fellowships in Pharmacology and Schizophrenia Research through the National Institutes of Health. She is also active in the minority issues and cultural psychiatry, and has received regional and national recognition for her clinical care, research and teaching.

Current Research and Scholarly Interests The ultimate goal of the laboratory is to develop efficient therapeutic strategies to achieve CNS neural repair, through promoting neuroprotection, axon regeneration and functional recovery.
More specifically, we study retinal ganglion cell (RGC) and optic nerve in various optic neuropathies including traumatic, glaucomatous and inflammatory optic nerve injuries to fully understand the molecular mechanisms of CNS neurodegeneration and axon regeneration failure.

Current Research and Scholarly Interests How do cells determine their shape and grow?
How do molecules inside cells get to the right place at the right time?
Our group tries to answer these questions using a systems biology approach, in which we integrate interacting networks of protein and lipids with the physical forces determined by the spatial geometry of the cell. We use theoretical and computational techniques to make predictions that we can verify experimentally using synthetic, chemical, or genetic perturbations.

Current Research and Scholarly Interests Dr. Huang's laboratory aims to understand the chemical and mechanical interactions between extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins and pluripotent stem cells that regulate vascular and myogenic differentiation. The fundamental insights of cell-matrix interactions are applied towards stem cell-based therapies with respect to improving cell survival and regenerative capacity, as well as engineered vascularized tissues for therapeutic transplantation.

Current Research and Scholarly Interests We study the role of oxygen free radicals in oxidative tissue damage and degeneration. Our research tools include transgenic and knockout mice and tissue culture cells for in vitro gene expression.

Current Research and Scholarly Interests 1) We study the mechanisms of neural degeneration and regeneration with the specific goal of developing treatments to prevent and reverse vision loss. (e.g., Laha and Huberman, Science, 2017; Lim et al., Nature Neuroscience, 2016).
2) We study the neural circuits that merge visual perceptions with internal states, to drive adaptive behavioral decisions. We are parsing the neural circuits related to anxiety, and visually-driven autonomic arousal (e.g., Salay et al., Nature, 2018).

Current Research and Scholarly Interests We are interested in the neuronal mechanisms that underlie synchronous oscillatory activity in the thalamus, cortex and the massively interconnected thalamocortical system. Such oscillations are related to cognitive processes, normal sleep activities and certain forms of epilepsy. Our approach is an analysis of the discrete components (cells, synapses, microcircuits) that make up thalamic and cortical circuits, and reconstitution of components into in silico computational networks.

Bio Monika Huss, DVM, MS, received her D.V.M. from Western University of Health Sciences in 2010 and completed her residency training in Laboratory Animal Medicine at Stanford in 2015. Upon completion, she joined the Veterinary Service Center as a clinical veterinarian before becoming a clinical instructor for the Department of Comparative Medicine in 2016. Her interests include animal welfare, pain recognition, anesthesia and analgesia.

Bio Dr. Huynh is an interventional spine physiatrist at the Stanford University Spine Center, where she specializes in the comprehensive conservative management of spine disorders. She earned her medical degree from Albert Einstein College of Medicine and completed a Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation residency at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, where she served as Chief Resident. She then went on to fulfill a fellowship in Interventional Spine at Stanford University. She specializes in non-operative spine and musculoskeletal care, including fluoroscopic and ultrasound guided procedures.

Joo Ha Hwang, MD, PhD
Professor of Medicine (Gastroenterology and Hepatology) at the Stanford University Medical Center
Bio Dr. Hwang specializes in early detection of gastrointestinal malignancies including esophageal cancer, gastric (stomach) cancer, pancreatic cancer, bile duct cancer and colon cancer. Dr. Hwang performs advanced endoscopic procedures including EUS-FNA, ERCP and enteroscopy. In addition, Dr. Hwang also performs per-oral endoscopic myotomy (POEM), endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) to resect large colorectal polyps, and endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) to resect early esophageal, gastric, and colorectal cancers.
Dr. Hwang has both a clinical and research interest in improving the early detection of gastric cancer. He is the Principal Investigator of the GAstric Precancerous conditions Study (GAPS), a prospective study of patients with gastric intestinal metaplasia and other precancerous conditions which combines comprehensive clinical and endoscopic data with a large bio-specimen repository. His research group uses both epidemiologic and translational approaches to understand risk factors for gastric cancer, and develop biomarkers to improve the early diagnosis of gastric cancers. He also directed public policy efforts to increase recognition of gastric cancer risk among high-risk populations, and serve as the Chairperson of the Asian American Stomach Cancer Disparity Task Force.
Dr. Hwang received his bachelor's degree from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana in electrical engineering. He then received his M.D. degree from the University of Chicago and his Ph.D. in bioengineering from the University of Washington. He did his residency in internal medicine and fellowship in gastroenterology at the University of Washington and was a faculty member at the University of Washington from 2004 to 2017. He has been selected as one of ?Seattle?s Top Doctors? by both Seattle Magazine and Seattle Metropolitan Magazine.
Dr. Hwang is board certified in gastroenterology. He is active with local, national and international professional societies. He is a fellow of the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (FASGE) and is a past-president of the Pacific Northwest Gastroenterology Society.
In addition to his clinical activities, Dr. Hwang is interested in medical device innovation. Dr. Hwang actively participates in research related to treatment of pancreatic cancer with focused ultrasound. He currently has NIH funding to investigate the use of focused ultrasound for enhancing drug delivery to pancreatic tumors. He is the current president of the International Society for Therapeutic Ultrasound (ISTU).
