Current Research and Scholarly Interests My primary area of interest is understanding the pathogenesis of problem behaviors shown by individuals diagnosed with neurogenetic disorders such as fragile X syndrome, Cornelia de Lange syndrome and Prader-Willi syndrome. I study methods for determining how environmental and biological factors can affect the development of aberrant behaviors in these syndromes. The end goal of my research is to create patient-specific methods for treating the symptoms of these disorders.

A California Population-Based Twin Study of Autism
This will address several fundamental questions: (1) What is the heritability of autism (2) What is the contribution of genetic factors to variation in symptom dimensions? (3) Is there a continuum between the quantitative neurocognitive traits and clinical disorder? (4) What proportion of the variance in the neurocognitive traits is accounted for by genetic and non-genetic factors?

Gene, Brain and Behavior in Turner Syndrome(Reiss)
The primary objective of this project is to use advanced, multi-modal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques, analyses of X chromosome parent-of-origin and cognitive-behavioral assessment to elucidate the effects of monosomy and X-linked imprinting on neurodevelopment and neural function in a large cohort of young girls with Turner syndrome, pre-estrogen replacement.
Project F: Genomic Analysis in narcolepsy cataplexy
The goal of the project is to locate genes outside the HLA region that influence susceptibility to narcolepsy. In order to localize these genes we will carry out a linkage and association study in the most extensive world-wide collection of DNAs from well-characterized patients with narcolepsy and their families.

Current Research and Scholarly Interests We are currently investigating the effects of deep brain stimulation in obesity using mouse models of human behavior. Many obese individuals exhibit behavioral disinhibition, a clinical feature of many neurologic and psychiatric conditions. We are searching for electrical signals in the brain that can predict aberrant behaviors and trigger the release of deep brain stimulation to block these behaviors. We are dissecting the mesocorticolimbic circuit with novel techniques including optogenetics.

Current Research and Scholarly Interests Dr. Hammer's primary research interests are pediatric pharmacology and perioperative care of children undergoing cardiac surgery. He has numerous funded research projects in these areas, including an NIH grant for $4.3 million to study the pharmacology of sodium nitroprusside, a drug commonly used for blood pressure control in the operating room and ICU. Dr. Hammer has two other NIH grants and other ongoing research projects in the area of pediatric pharmacology.

Current Research and Scholarly Interests His research and clinical work focuses on the development of interventional techniques for fetal and neonatal treatment of congenital heart disease, pulmonary, vascular physiology, and the neurologic impact of open-heart surgery. He developed and pioneered the “unifocalization” procedure, in which a single procedure is used to repair a complex and life-threatening congenital heart defect rather than several staged open-heart surgeries as performed by other surgeons.

Bio Kate Hardy is a California Licensed Psychologist who has specialized in working with individuals with psychosis for over 15 years in both research and clinical settings. Dr. Hardy received her doctorate in clinical psychology from the University of Liverpool, United Kingdom. She has worked in specialist early psychosis services in both the UK and the US, including UCSF?s Prodrome Assessment Research and Treatment (PART) program, where she completed her post-doctoral fellowship, and as Clinical Director for the Prevention and Recovery from Early Psychosis (PREP) program. Dr. Hardy has significant experience in providing CBTp to individuals with early psychosis, and those at risk of developing psychosis, in both individual and group settings and integration of this clinical intervention to broader systems and staff teams. She has led multiple trainings and workshops in CBTp to a wide variety of audiences including community clinicians, psychiatrists, and families, and provides ongoing supervision and consultation in this approach. Dr. Hardy is also involved in the implementation of national strategies to increase dissemination of early psychosis models with the aim of bringing these cutting edge treatments to a broader population.

Current Research and Scholarly Interests I am interested in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) applications including cardiovascular, abdominal, breast and musculoskeletal imaging. These applications require development of faster and more efficient MRI methods that provide improved diagnostic contrast compared with current methods. Current Research and Scholarly Interests The Gephart lab focuses on translational neuro-oncology research, combining basic neuroscience, genetics, and tumor biology, with a unique insight into the pressing clinical questions facing patients with brain tumors. As a practicing neurosurgeon serving brain tumor patients in my clinic and operating room, our lab is uniquely positioned to be shaped by the clinical needs of patients. We focus on understanding the genetic and epigenetic mechanisms driving tumorigenesis in the central nervous system. Ultimately these insights will identify novel drug targets and improve diagnostic capacity. Our investigations into tumor cell biology, developmental neuroscience, cell signal transduction, and translational preliminary studies of novel therapeutics each feedback into and exponentially advance the field of neuro-oncology. Our discoveries in the lab develop hypotheses about novel treatments, and working with patients and primary samples forms projects for the lab regarding tumor cell biology and normal neurodevelopment.

Current Research and Scholarly Interests Neurosurgery for intractable neuropsychiatric illness has emerged as a safe and effective treatment option for many patients, most notably those with Parkinson?s Disease. However, study of the circuit and synaptic-level mechanisms for Deep Brain Stimulation's therapeutic efficacy has remained challenging. We have developed a brain-slice model which both recapitulates key features of in vivo recordings and allows, for the first time, the study of synaptic physiology and plasticity during DBS.

We are interested how the sensory epithelia of the inner ear that harbor the sensory hair cells develop, how the cells mature, and how these epithelia respond to toxic insults. The overarching goal of this research is to find was to regenerate lost sensory hair cells in mammals.

Her current project aims to develop a brief CBT intervention to reduce anxiety in patients with metastatic non-small-cell lung cancer and their informal family caregivers. Clinically, Dr. Hendriksen treats mood and anxiety disorders, particularly in patients with chronic medical illness.

Bio Dr. Hennessey is a Clinical Instructor of Anesthesia and Critical Care Medicine. She earned her undergraduate degree in Neuroscience at Vanderbilt University and her medical degree at Saint Louis University. Following an internship at St. John?s Mercy Medical Center in St. Louis, she received her anesthesia and critical care training at Stanford University. Dr. Hennessey is board certified in Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine. She joined the faculty at Stanford in 2012 and performs clinical duties on the following services: general anesthesia, anesthesia preoperative care clinic, cardiothoracic intensive care unit, and medical-surgical intensive care unit. Clinical areas of study include early mobility and delirium management of critically ill patients as well as patient-family interaction in the ICU. She currently serves as the Associate Program Director of the Anesthesia Critical Care Medicine Fellowship and as Associate Rotation Director for the Critical Care Core Clerkship at Stanford School of Medicine. Her medical education interests include simulation, flipped-classroom models, quality-improvement training for trainees, and patient-doctor communication skills.

Dr. Henri attended Stanford University, where she received her undergraduate degree in Biological Sciences. At Stanford she was the recipient of the President's Award for Academic Excellence in the Freshman Year, awarded to the top 3% of students. She has been the recipient of an American Heart Association Internship at the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). She also was awarded two Howard Hughe's Institute summer Research Fellowships at the NIH, one at the National Cancer Institute and the second at the National Eye Institute.
In 2000, Dr. Henri graduated from Harvard Medical School. She then completed a Surgical Internship at Stanford Medical Center, followed by an Internal Medicine Residency at Stanford in 2004. Between 2004 to 2013 she was a Faculty Physician at Stanford Internal Medicine.
Dr. Henri was named as a "Top Reviewer" based on the quality of reviews by the Annals of Internal Medicine in 2006. With Dr. Peter Rudd, she co-authored the chapter "Hypertension: Context and Managment" in the Textbook of Cardiovascular Medicine published in 2007. Between 2006-2007 Dr. Henri was a member of the California Academic Collaborative on Chronic Care. She served as the Clinic Chief at Blake Wilbur of Stanford Medical Group from 2006-2009, as well as on the General Internal Medicine Executive Committee at Stanford between 2006-2009.
In August 2013, Dr. Henri joined Stanford Concierge Medicine. She also currently serves as Co-Director of the American College of Physician's Internal Medicine Maintenance of Certification Course held in San Francisco. Dr. Henri has been a Reviewer for the American College of Physicians on multiple projects, most recently Internal Medicine Essentials published in 2015.
Dr. Henri feels that comprehensive preventive care, combined with excellent patient-physician communication, is fundamental to her care of patients.

Current Research and Scholarly Interests The main interest of my lab is to understand how the properties of neocortical neurons, the circuits they form and the inputs they receive give rise to neuronal activity and behavior. Our approach includes behavioral studies, two-photon calcium imaging, in vivo whole cell recording in behaving animals and optogenetic methods to activate or to silence the activity of cortical neurons.

Bio Paula J. Adams Hillard, M.D., is Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Stanford University School of Medicine where she serves as Associate Chair for Medical Student Education. She earned a B.S. in Zoology from the University of North Carolina and obtained her M.D. from Stanford University School of Medicine. She completed a residency in OB/Gyn at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. She was on the faculty at the University of Virginia, and served as Professor in the Departments of OB/Gyn and Pediatrics at the Cincinnati Children?s Hospital (CCHMC) /University of Cincinnati Medical Center for 23 years. At CCHMC she was the founder of a postgraduate fellowship in Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology. She currently directs the program in Adolescent and Pediatric Gynecology at the Lucile Packard Children?s Hospital at Stanford.
She has been active on a number of national medical committees, including chair of the American College Obstetricians and Gynecologists' (ACOG) Committees on Patient Education, Adolescent Health, and Guidelines for Women?s Health; she is a past member of the Gynecologic Practice Committee and the Gynecology Document Review Committee, and is currently a member of the Ethics Committee. She has been an examiner for the American Board of Obstetricians and Gynecologists since 1991. She is a Board Member of the Association of Professors of Gynecology and Obstetrics, and was elected a fellow of the American Gynecological and Obstetrical Society. She is a past president of the North American Society for Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology, and is an active contributor to the literature in adolescent gynecology and contraception with over 160 journal articles and abstracts published. She is the sole editor of two textbooks: the 5-Minute Consult in Obstetrics and Gynecology (2008) and Practical Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology (2013). She is the author of over 140 peer -reviewed articles and abstracts, and over 100 book chapters on women?s health. She has been a consultant and a member of tasks forces and committees for the CDC, the U.S. FDA, the NICHD, the AMA, American Cancer Society, and ACOG. In addition to her work as a member of editorial boards and as an ad hoc reviewer for professional publications, Dr. Hillard has extensive experience with the consumer press. She was a contributing editor to Parents magazine from 1982-1990, writing a monthly column on pregnancy and birth--and currently acts as an editorial consultant to women?s publications such as Good Housekeeping, Family Circle, Woman?s Day, Cosmopolitan, Redbook, Glamour, YM, and Seventeen, as well as ABC News. She has been recognized for her teaching, and has been selected as one of 15 senior faculty master teachers/mentors for medical students at the Stanford University School of Medicine in a formal mentoring program called Educators for CARE: Compassion, Advocacy, Responsibility, and Empathy.

Karen G. Hirsch, MD

Current Research and Scholarly Interests Dr. Karen G. Hirsch cares for critically ill patients with neurologic disorders in the intensive care unit and for patients with cerebrovascular disease in the inpatient stroke unit. Dr. Hirsch's research focuses on novel imaging techniques such as functional brain imaging in patients with cardiac arrest and traumatic brain injury. She also studies methods of non-invasive measurement of cerebral blood flow, oxygenation, and cerebrovascular autoregulation and how these parameters might be targeted to improve outcome in patients with neurologic injury. In the outpatient clinic, she sees patients with head injury, stroke and other neurovascular diseases in addition to patients who have been discharged from the neurological intensive care unit.

Current Research and Scholarly Interests My main research work is in "outcomes research", especially examining the field of cardiovascular medicine. Particular areas of interest are the integration of economic and quality of life data into randomized clinical trials, evidence-based medicine, decision models, and cost-effectiveness analysis. I am also interested in the application of novel genetic, biomarker, and imaging tests to assess risk and guide clinical management of coronary artery disease.

Current Research and Scholarly Interests Dr. Ho did her PhD work in HSV pathogenesis and postdoctoral research in CNS gene therapy with viral vectors. Her current interests are in viral and fungal infections in immunocompromised patients and her research focuses on infection complications in neutropenic patients. In collaboration with Dr. C. Dekker of the Stanford-LPCH Vaccine Program and with Dr. J. Brown of the BMT Division, she is also conducting clinical trials on vaccines, antivirals and antifungals as a co-investigator.
