The J.G. Jackson and C.J. Wood Professor in Chemistry
Bio Professor Dai?s research spans chemistry, physics, and materials and biomedical sciences, leading to materials with properties useful in electronics, energy storage and biomedicine. Recent developments include near-infrared-II fluorescence imaging, ultra-sensitive diagnostic assays, a fast-charging aluminum battery and inexpensive electrocatalysts that split water into oxygen and hydrogen fuels.
Born in 1966 in Shaoyang, China, Hongjie Dai began his formal studies in physics at Tsinghua U. in Beijing (B.S. 1989) and applied sciences at Columbia U. (M.S. 1991). His doctoral work under Dr. Charles Lieber at Harvard U. (Ph.D. 1994) focused on charge-density waves and superconductivity. During postdoctoral research at Rice U. with Dr. Richard Smalley, he developed carbon nanotube probes for atomic force microscopy. He joined the Stanford faculty in 1997, and in 2007 was named Jackson?Wood Professor of Chemistry. Among many awards, he has been recognized with the ACS Pure Chemistry Award, APS McGroddy Prize for New Materials, Julius Springer Prize for Applied Physics and Materials Research Society Mid-Career Award. He has been elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, AAAS and National Academy of Sciences.
The Dai Laboratory has advanced the synthesis and basic understanding of carbon nanomaterials and applications in nanoelectronics, nanomedicine, energy storage and electrocatalysis.
The Dai Lab pioneered some of the now-widespread uses of chemical vapor deposition for carbon nanotube (CNT) growth, including vertically aligned nanotubes and patterned growth of single-walled CNTs on wafer substrates, facilitating fundamental studies of their intrinsic properties. The group developed the synthesis of graphene nanoribbons, and of nanocrystals and nanoparticles on CNTs and graphene with controlled degrees of oxidation, producing a class of strongly coupled hybrid materials with advanced properties for electrochemistry, electrocatalysis and photocatalysis. The lab?s synthesis of a novel plasmonic gold film has enhanced near-infrared fluorescence up to 100-fold, enabling ultra-sensitive assays of disease biomarkers.
Nanoscale Physics and Electronics
High quality nanotubes from his group?s synthesis are widely used to investigate the electrical, mechanical, optical, electro-mechanical and thermal properties of quasi-one-dimensional systems. Lab members have studied ballistic electron transport in nanotubes and demonstrated nanotube-based nanosensors, Pd ohmic contacts and ballistic field effect transistors with integrated high-kappa dielectrics.
Nanomedicine and NIR-II Imaging
Advancing biological research with CNTs and nano-graphene, group members have developed ??? stacking non-covalent functionalization chemistry, molecular cellular delivery (drugs, proteins and siRNA), in vivo anti-cancer drug delivery and in vivo photothermal ablation of cancer. Using nanotubes as novel contrast agents, lab collaborations have developed in vitro and in vivo Raman, photoacoustic and fluorescence imaging. Lab members have exploited the physics of reduced light scattering in the near-infrared-II (1000-1700nm) window and pioneered NIR-II fluorescence imaging to increase tissue penetration depth in vivo. Video-rate NIR-II imaging can measure blood flow in single vessels in real time. The lab has developed novel NIR-II fluorescence agents, including CNTs, quantum dots, conjugated polymers and small organic dyes with promise for clinical translation.
Electrocatalysis and Batteries
The Dai group?s nanocarbon?inorganic particle hybrid materials have opened new directions in energy research. Advances include electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction and water splitting catalysts including NiFe layered-double-hydroxide for oxygen evolution. Recently, the group also demonstrated an aluminum ion battery with graphite cathodes and ionic liquid electrolytes, a substantial breakthrough in battery science.

Bio Gary L. Darmstadt, MD, MS, is Associate Dean for Maternal and Child Health, and Professor of Neonatal and Developmental Pediatrics in the Department of Pediatrics at the Stanford University School of Medicine. Previously Dr. Darmstadt was Senior Fellow in the Global Development Program at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF), where he led a cross-foundation initiative on Women, Girls and Gender, assessing how addressing gender inequalities and empowering women and girls leads to improved gender equality as well as improved health and development outcomes. Prior to this role, he served as BMGF Director of Family Health, leading strategy development and implementation across nutrition, family planning and maternal, newborn and child health.
Darmstadt was formerly Associate Professor and Founding Director of the International Center for Advancing Neonatal Health in the Department of International Health at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. He has trained in Pediatrics at Johns Hopkins University, in Dermatology at Stanford University, and in Pediatric Infectious Disease as a fellow at the University of Washington, Seattle, where he was Assistant Professor in the Departments of Pediatrics and Medicine. Dr. Darmstadt left the University of Washington to serve as Senior Research Advisor for the Saving Newborn Lives program of Save the Children-US, where he led the development and implementation of the global research strategy for newborn health and survival, before joining Johns Hopkins.

Bio Dr. Das specializes in the treatment of thoracic malignancies. She sees and treats patients both at the Stanford Cancer Center and at the Palo Alto VA Hospital. She is Chief of Oncology at the Palo Alto VA and also leads the VA thoracic tumor board on a biweekly basis. She has a strong interest in clinical research, serving as a principal investigator for multiple clinical and translational studies at the Palo Alto VA, and also as a co-investigator on all of the lung cancer trials at Stanford. Bio Dauskardt and his group have worked extensively on integrating new materials into emerging technologies including thin-film structures for nanoscience and energy technologies, high-performance composite and laminates for aerospace, and on biomaterials and soft tissues in bioengineering. His group has pioneered methods for characterizing adhesion and cohesion of thin films used extensively in device technologies. His research on wound healing has concentrated on establishing a biomechanics framework to quantify the mechanical stresses and biologic responses in healing wounds and define how the mechanical environment affects scar formation. Experimental studies are complimented with a range of multiscale computational capabilities. His research includes interaction with researchers nationally and internationally in academia, industry, and clinical practice.

Bio Dr. Guido A. Davidzon is a physician-scientist board certified in Nuclear Medicine. He is an attending physician in Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging at Stanford Health Care.
He graduated with honors from medical school in Argentina and completed an internship at Yale University New-Haven Hospital in Connecticut. He did his residency and was chief resident at Stanford Health Care. He completed a research fellowship in mitochondrial diseases at Columbia University in New York and, a U.S. National Library of Medicine Award supported, Biomedical Informatics fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital in conjunction with a Science Masters at MIT.
Dr. Davidzon is Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Radiology at Stanford University. His clinical specialties include early diagnostic imaging of cancer, coronary artery disease, and dementias using molecular probes as well as the treatment of cancer for which he employs targeted radiopharmaceutical therapy.
Dr. Davidzon investigates the use of machine learning in medical imaging to improve clinical outcomes, he is involved in the professional Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging. He serves as a peer reviewer for multiple medical journals. Dr. Davidzon is a native of Buenos Aires, Argentina and has lived in the U.S. for over a decade. He travels to Argentina frequently, with his wife and three sons.

Current Research and Scholarly Interests Professor Davis? research and teaching deals broadly with the role that water and sanitation services play in promoting public health and economic development, with particular emphasis on low- and middle-income countries. They have conducted field research in more than 20 countries, most recently including Zambia, Bangladesh, and Kenya.

Current Research and Scholarly Interests Childhood cancers can be considered aberrations of normal tissue development. We are interested in understanding childhood cancers through the lens of normal development. Further, individual tumors are composed of heterogeneous cell populations, not all cells being equal in their ability to respond to treatment or to repopulate a tumor. Thus, we take single cell approach to determine populations of clinical relevance.

Current Research and Scholarly Interests We are using Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Human to conduct whole genome analysis projects. The yeast genome sequence has approximately 6,000 genes. We have made a set of haploid and diploid strains (21,000) containing a complete deletion of each gene. In order to facilitate whole genome analysis each deletion is molecularly tagged with a unique 20-mer DNA sequence. This sequence acts as a molecular bar code and makes it easy to identify the presence of each deletion.

Current Research and Scholarly Interests Our Neuromuscular Division coordinates a comprehensive effort to conquer peripheral nerve and muscle disorders, including the muscular dystrophies, motor neuron disorders, neuromuscular junction abnormalities, and peripheral neuropathies. With patients and families foremost in mind, we have had success defining and combating these diseases, with research focused on identifying genetic causes, developing novel treatment, and maximizing patient function by optimizing current management.

Current Research and Scholarly Interests The treatment of chronic pain with long term opioid medication is what has fueled the so called ?opioid epidemic? with drug overdose deaths quadrupling in the past decade and addiction rates estimated to be more than 20 percent of patients taking medical opioids long term. Associated complications with these medications are not generally known to the patients. The project enables the patient to examine risks versus benefits, presents safer and more effective alternatives to opioid therapy and educates about options available for reducing or transitioning off opioids.

Bio Dr. De Golia specializes in the treatment of mood and anxiety disorders with an expertise in time-limited dynamic psychotherapy. She is Section Chief of the Assessment Clinics and Director of the Evaluation Clinic. Dr. De Golia is the Associate Chair for Clinician Educator Professional Development where she is involved in developing faculty development programs including mentorship. She is also the Associate Residency Director of the Adult Psychiatry Residency Program where she has been involved in educational programming and curricular development. She is a Peer Teaching Coach in the Stanford Teaching and Mentoring Academy, teaches regularly with the Stanford Center for Faculty Development, and is a Senior Fellow at Stanford's Center for Innovation in Global Health. Bio Dr. Wendy DeMartini is a Professor and the Chief of the Breast Imaging Division in the Department of Radiology at Stanford University School of Medicine. Dr. DeMartini completed her fellowship in Breast Imaging at the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle, Washington. She then served as Breast Imaging faculty at the University of Washington where she became Associate Professor and Associate Director of Clinical Services, and at the University of Wisconsin where she became Professor and Chief of Breast Imaging. Her work is focused upon high quality patient care, clinical research and education.
Dr. DeMartini has more than 100 research presentations, abstracts/publications, review articles or book chapters. Her research is directed toward the appropriate evidence-based use of imaging tests to optimize the detection and evaluation of breast cancer. She has served as an investigator on several studies of breast MRI funded by the National Cancer Institute and by the American College of Radiology Imaging Network (ACRIN). Particular research topics have included the development of a pilot tool for predicting the probability of malignancy of breast MRI lesions, assessment of the impact of background parenchymal enhancement (BPE) on breast MRI accuracy, and evaluation of current utilization patterns of breast MRI and other emerging technologies.
Dr. DeMartini is a highly sought-after educator. She lectures on a broad spectrum of breast imaging topics nationally and internationally, including in the Americas, Europe, Australasia and Africa. She is also the Co-Director of the American College of Radiology (ACR) Education Center Breast MRI with Biopsy Course. Dr. DeMartini is an active member of many professional organizations and committees, including in the Radiologic Society of North America, the American College of Radiology and the Society of Breast Imaging (SBI). She was elected as an SBI Fellow in 2009, and will be President of the SBI in 2017-2018.

Bio Dr. Demirci is currently a Professor at Stanford University School of Medicine with tenure at the Canary Center for Early Cancer Detection. Prior to his Stanford appointment, he was an Associate Professor of Medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard Medical School and at Harvard-MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology serving at the Division of Biomedical Engineering, Division of Infectious Diseases and Renal Division. He leads a group of 20+ researchers focusing on micro- and nano-scale technologies. He received his B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering in 1999 as a James B. Angell Scholar (summa cum laude) from University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. He received his M.S. degree in 2001 in Electrical Engineering, M.S. degree in Management Science and Engineering in 2005, and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering in 2005, all from Stanford University.
The Demirci Bio-Acoustic MEMS in Medicine Lab (BAMM) specializes in applying micro- and nanoscale technologies to problems in medicine at the interface between micro/nanoscale engineering and medicine. Our goal is to apply innovative technologies to clinical problems. Our major research theme focuses on creating new microfluidic technology platforms targeting broad applications in medicine. In this interdisciplinary space at the convergence of engineering, biology and materials science, we create novel technologies for disposable point-of-care (POC) diagnostics and monitoring of infectious diseases, cancer and controlling cellular microenvironment in nanoliter droplets for biopreservation and microscale tissue engineering applications. These applications are unified around our expertise to test the limits of cell manipulation by establishing microfluidic platforms to provide solutions to real world problems at the clinic.
Our lab creates technologies to manipulate cells in nanoliter volumes to enable solutions for real world problems in medicine including applications in infectious disease diagnostics and monitoring for global health, cancer early detection, cell encapsulation in nanoliter droplets for cryobiology, and bottom-up tissue engineering. Dr. Demirci has published over 120 peer reviewed publications in journals including PNAS, Nature Communications, Advanced Materials, Small, Trends in Biotechnology, Chemical Society Reviews and Lab-chip, over 150 conference abstracts and proceedings, 10+ book chapters, and an edited book. His work was highlighted in Wired Magazine, Nature Photonics, Nature Medicine, MIT Technology Review, Reuters Health News, Science Daily, AIP News, BioTechniques, and Biophotonics. He is fellow-elect of the American Institute of Biological and Medical Engineering (AIMBE, 2017). His scientific work has been recognized by numerous national and international awards including the NSF Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Award (2012), the IEEE-EMBS Early Career Achievement Award (2012), Scientist of the year award from Stanford radiology Department (2017). He was selected as one of the world?s top 35 young innovators under the age of 35 (TR-35) by the MIT Technology Review at the age of 28. In 2004, he led a team that won the Stanford University Entrepreneur?s Challenge Competition and Global Start-up Competition in Singapore. His work has been translated to start-up companies including DxNow, KOEK Biotechnology and LEVITAS. There has been over 10,000 live births in the US, Europe and Turkey using the sperm selection technology that came out of Dr. Demirci's lab. He has been cited over 3000 times within the last two years (H index, 60).

Bio Dr. Deresinski received his medical degree from the University of Illinois College of Medicine and received training in Internal Medicine there and at Stanford, where he also completed a fellowship in Infectious Diseases. For 3 decades, he maintained a private practice in Infectious Disease, HIV, and Travel Medicine and was Hospital Epidemiologist at Sequoia Hospital where he also served as President of the Medical Staff for 2 years. He was also Associate Chief of the Division of Infectious Diseases and for 14 years was Director of the AIDS Program at the Santa Valley Medical Center, a Stanford-affiliated public teaching hospital. During that time he won several teaching awards at Stanford. In 1987, he founded the AIDS Community Research Consortium, serving as its Medical Director and Chairman of the Board for almost 2 decades. He was also Site Principal Investigator for the Stanford ACTU and the California Collaborative Treatment Group and has worked on AIDS education in Kampala, Uganda. Dr. Deresinski is currently Clinical Professor of Medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases and Geographic Medicine at Stanford and is Medical Director of the Stanford Antimicrobial Stewardship Program and Chair of the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee and of the Specialty Drugs Subcommittee. He has special interests in antimicrobial resistance, optimal antimicrobial use, fungal infections, and infections in immunocomopromised hosts.
Dr. Deresinski has published more than 100 peer-reviewed papers as well as number of book chapters. He is a Section Editor of Clinical Infectious Diseases and is a past Chair of the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) Standards and Practice Guidelines Committee as well as member of the IDSA Board of Directors. He is a member of the HIVMA, in addition to a number of other societies including SHEA and is a Fellow in the American College of Physicians as well as IDSA. He is a past winner of the IDSA Watanakunokorn Clinician of the YearAward.

Current Research and Scholarly Interests Our laboratory aims to analyze and solve healthcare problems relating to neurosurgical care and spine care on a population level. Through the development of algorithms that can be applied to various large national and state-level healthcare datasets, our goal is to harness big data to:
1. Understand how quality in neurosurgical care and spine care can be defined in both short and long-term measures
2. Develop appropriate measures of quality neurosurgical and spine care
3. Create benchmarks for care in neurosurgery and spine surgery
4. Create multivariate bio-statistical models of pre-operative, peri-operative and post-operative events and long term patient outcomes
5. Understand how existing paradigms in neurosurgical care and spine care can be potentially improved to improve patient outcomes
In addition to our population level research, our laboratory has been a national pioneer in integrating prospective outcomes driven medical informative and database systems into the electronic health record. This allows us to identify pre- and post-operative treatment measures that influence patient outcomes, and in doing so improve patient safety and maximize the efficacy of current treatments for neurosurgical and spine patients.

Bio Dr. Kaniksha Desai is a board-certified endocrinologist and clinical assistant professor of endocrinology at Stanford University. She completed her endocrinology fellowship at the Mayo Clinic, with an emphasis on the management of patients with thyroid cancer. Dr. Desai?s clinical practice focuses on the management of patients with thyroid diseases, including thyroid nodules and thyroid cancers, and the management of patients with pituitary disorders. She also maintains board certification in neck ultrasonography and internal medicine.

Bio Dr. Tina Desai earned her MD (1991) from the Brown University Medical Education Program in Providence, Rhode Island. She then completed a surgical residency in General Surgery at the University of Chicago Hospitals and Clinics, including a 2-yr research fellowship. She completed her Vascular Surgery Fellowship training at the University of Chicago Hospitals (1999).
Dr. Desai has additionally completed a year-long fellowship in Medical Ethics at the MacLean Center for Clinical Medical Ethics at the University of Chicago (2008).
Dr. Desai has previously served on the surgical faculty at the University of Chicago as Assistant Professor of Surgery and Director of Endovascular Services until 2010, and as Clinical Associate Professor of Surgery at the University of Chicago after joining NorthShore University HealthSystem in the Division of Vascular Surgery until 2015.
In July 2015, Dr. Desai joined the faculty of Stanford University Division of Vascular Surgery and maintains a primary practice at Marin General Hospital.
Dr. Desai has a special interest in endovascular and surgical treatment of abdominal and thoracic aortic pathology, carotid artery occlusive disease, and peripheral vascular disease. She also has an interest in visceral ischemic syndromes and thoracic outlet syndrome. Dr. Desai?s research interests include mesenteric ischemia, vena cava filters in deep vein thrombosis, medical ethics, and the development of structured clinical documentation systems. She maintains a strong interest in resident and fellow education.

Current Research and Scholarly Interests We investigate the cellular and molecular events that regulate proper development of the lungs, including how the gas exchange region is maintained and renewed throughout life. We apply this knowledge to dissect how dysregulation of these normal processes can cause or contribute to specific lung diseases like pulmonary fibrosis, emphysema, and lung cancer, and we are interested in uncovering how lung stem cells are regulated in the hopes of harnessing them as a regenerative therapy for patients.

Bio My research focuses on the use of neuroimaging methods to understand brain structure and function and treatment-related plasticity in individuals with chronic pain. Current projects focus on basic mechanisms and biomarkers underlying chronic headache subtypes using multimodal brain imaging and deep phenotyping and repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation to augment pain and hypnotizability. Additionally, I am interested in understanding the central mechanisms of chronic pain associated with Lyme disease.

Bio Lauren Destino, MD, is the Associate Medical Director of the Pediatric Hospital Medicine Division and Associate Medical Director of the acute care floor at Lucile Packard Children?s Hospital (LPCH) Stanford and a clinical assistant professor at Stanford Univeristy. She was a site co-Investigator for the I-PASS study at Stanford and is the site Principal Investigator for the PCORI grant, Bringing I-PASS to the Bedside: A Communication Bundle to Improve Patient Safety and Experience. She is involved in a number of quality and process improvement related activities at LPCH. She is the director for a required quality improvement rotation for residents and co-directs the scholarly concentration for quality and process improvement. Instructor, Pediatrics - Stem Cell Transplantation
Bio Dr. Daniel Dever is a Research Instructor in the laboratory of Dr. Matthew Porteus at Stanford University, in the Department of Pediatrics, Division of Stem Cell Transplantation and Regenerative Medicine. He completed his PhD in molecular toxicology at the University of Rochester where he studied the mechanisms of the aryl hydrocarbon receptor in mediating cerebellar transcriptional programs. During his postdoctoral work in the Porteus group, he (with others) developed a CRISPR/Cas9-based beta-globin (HBB) gene editing by homologous recombination methodology (gene targeting) in CD34+ hematopoietic stem cells as a potential therapeutic strategy to treat severe sickle cell disease. Dr. Dever (along with collaborators) has now successfully used this methodology to efficiently target >15 genes in primary blood cells that are associated with hematopoiesis, hematopoietic genetic diseases, hematopoietic malignancies, or safe harbor sites. Dr. Dever's primary research interests are to continue to leverage CRISPR/Cas9-based genome editing technologies to study the molecular mechanisms of gene targeting in human hematopoietic stem cells with the ultimate goal of optimizing and further developing novel cell and gene therapies for disease of the blood and the immune system. Currently, he is leading IND-enabling preclinical efficacy, feasibility, safety and tumorigenicity studies for FDA approval of a first-in-human clinical trial at Stanford in 2018 for the treatment of severe sickle cell disease using CRISPR/Cas9-based HBB gene targeting in autologous hematopoietic stem cells.

Bio Dr. Dewan was born and raised in Kalamazoo, Michigan. She attended college and medical school in Chicago at Northwestern University as part of the Honors Program in Medical Education (HPME). During her residency in Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery Dr. Dewan trained in both Houston and Memphis. She completed a Laryngology fellowship at UCLA under Dr. Gerald Berke and Dr. Dinesh Chhetri.
As a Laryngologist, Dr. Dewan specializes in adult surgeries for swallowing, speaking and breathing disorders. She has a special interest in the surgical management of dysphagia, rehabilitation after total laryngectomy and the treatment of chronic cough. She has authored book chapters and published papers and continues to conduct clinical research in these areas, particularly with a focus on swallowing function and quality of life. She serves as a peer reviewer for multiple journals and a committee member within the American Academy of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery.

Current Research and Scholarly Interests My research uses cultivation-independent methods to investigate human-associated microbiota during health and disease. This work exploits high-throughput molecular approaches to characterize stereotypic patterns of microbial prevalence, diversity and abundance associated with specific clinical syndromes of interest. I am especially interested in identifying and enumerating cultivation-resistant pathogens causing cryptic infections, particularly intra-amniotic infections leading to preterm birth.

Bio Meghan Dickman, M.D., is Clinical Assistant Professor of Dermatology and Medical Director of Dermatology at Stanford ValleyCare. Dr. Dickman earned her B.S., with distinction, from the University of Michigan in 2006. She received her medical degree from the University of California, San Francisco. During medical school, Dr. Dickman was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. She completed her dermatology residency at Stanford University and served as Chief Resident in her final year. She is board certified in dermatology by the American Board of Dermatology. Her professional focus is general medical dermatology, including acne, psoriasis, skin cancer, and dermatologic surgery. Current Research and Scholarly Interests My laboratory focuses on two main areas: 1) cancer stem cell biology and 2) novel biomarkers for identifying the presence of malignant cells (diagnostic), predicting outcome (prognostic), and predicting response to therapy (predictive). Areas of study include cancers of the lung, breast, and gastrointestinal system. Clinically I specialize in the treatment of lung cancer and applications of stereotactic ablative radiotherapy and perform both prospective and retrospective clinical studies.

Bio Dr. Chitra Dinakar is a Clinical Professor of Medicine at Stanford University and the Clinical Chief of Allergy, Asthma and Immunodeficiency, Stanford Health Care. Prior to coming to Stanford she was a Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Missouri-Kansas City; and Director, Food Allergy Center at Children?s Mercy Hospital, Kansas City. She completed her fellowship in Allergy/Immunology (A/I) at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, Ohio, and her residency in pediatrics at Case Western Reserve University/Metrohealth Medical Center, Ohio. She completed her medical school and pediatric residency training at JIPMER, a premier medical institution in India.
Having had the benefit of experiencing health care in diverse settings, Dr. Dinakar is empowered with the perspective, and driven by the passion, to improve health care across the globe. Her interests and expertise include food allergies, asthma, and health care disparities, delivery, and outcomes. She serves on the editorial boards of four reputed Allergy/Immunology journals and the World Allergy Organization Web Editorial Board. She has been involved in more than 50 multi-centered, clinical trials relating to asthma and food allergies, and has over 100 peer-reviewed publications and research abstracts in prestigious journals.
One of her current research interests is ASIAd (Allergy/Asthma Studies in Individuals of Asian Descent), that explores the Care, Cure and Prevention of Allergic conditions in individuals of Asian lineage. She hopes to address the significant knowledge gaps and unmet needs regarding diagnostic, treatment and preventive options available to this demographic group. Her other ongoing research interests include the health impact of e-cigarettes, clinical intervention trials and outcomes research in asthma, and use of e-health to improve patient outcomes.

Bio Jennifer Dionne is an associate professor of Materials Science and Engineering at Stanford. Jen received her Ph. D. in Applied Physics at the California Institute of Technology, advised by Harry Atwater, and B.S. degrees in Physics and Systems & Electrical Engineering from Washington University in St. Louis. Prior to joining Stanford, she served as a postdoctoral researcher in Chemistry at Berkeley, advised by Paul Alivisatos. Jen?s research develops new optical materials and microscopies to observe chemical and biological processes as they unfold with nanometer scale resolution. She then uses these observations to help improve energy-relevant processes (such as photocatalysis and energy storage) and medical diagnostics and therapeutics. Her work has been recognized with the Alan T. Waterman Award (2019), a Moore Inventor Fellowship (2017), the Materials Research Society Young Investigator Award (2017), Adolph Lomb Medal (2016), Sloan Foundation Fellowship (2015), and the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (2014), and was recently featured on Oprah?s list of ?50 Things that will make you say ?Wow?!?.
Ana Clara DiRago
Clinical Instructor, Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences - Child and Adolescent Psychiatry
Bio Dr. DiRago is a bilingual (English/Spanish) licensed clinical psychologist who specializes in diagnostic psychological assessments of individuals across the lifespan. She is Adjunct Faculty at Palo Alto University/PGSP-Stanford Consortium where she teaches child assessment and personality and psychopathology assessment to graduate students.
Prior to her appointment at Stanford University, Dr. DiRago was the co-director of the assessment center at the Palo Alto University Gronowski Center where she trained and supervised advanced doctoral students on the psychological and neuropsychological assessment of children and adults. She also worked at Children's Health Council where she led multidisciplinary team evaluations for children and adolescents suspected of having severe and complex psychopathology, developmental disabilities, disruptive behavior disorders, learning disabilities, in-utero exposure to substances and/or autism spectrum disorders. She also conducted juvenile court ordered evaluations for San Mateo County. Dr. DiRago is currently the lead psychologist for Stanford's Program in Psychiatry and the Law.
Frederick M. Dirbas, MD

Current Research and Scholarly Interests My research interests are focused on minimizing the impact of breast cancer from a diagnostic and therapuetic standpoint. Breast MRI is a powerful tool to facilitate the screening for and staging of breast cancer, and can be valuable adjunct to guide breast surgery. Oncoplastic surgical techniques optimize cosmesis after breast cancer surgery. Accelerated radiotherapy after lumpectomy decreases radiotherapy treatment times from 6 weeks to just 1 to 5 days.

Bio I received my Master?s degree in speech language pathology from Purdue University in 2008. I then completed my Clinical Fellowship Year (CFY) at Indiana University Health ? Arnett Hospital in Lafayette, Indiana. Following the completion of my Master?s degree, I remained at Purdue and received my PhD in 2012 in laryngeal physiology with M. Preeti Sivasankar, PhD. I then completed postdoctoral training in the Department of Surgery, Division of Otolaryngology ? Head & Neck Surgery at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in the laboratory of Susan L. Thibeault, PhD studying vocal fold biology.
I joined the Stanford faculty in 2014 as an Assistant Professor. My clinical interests include the evaluation and treatment of patients with voice, resonance, airway, and swallowing disorders.
My overarching research goal is to use techniques from the basic sciences and human clinical sciences to improve the prevention and management of voice disorders. My research program is directed at improving our understanding of the biologic barriers essential to vocal fold health. Specifically, I investigate how external factors implicated in the development of voice disorders, such as inhaled pollutants, bacteria, and viruses, compromise the function of the vocal fold epithelial and mucus barriers and how these changes may influence voice production. I am also interested in clinical and quality of life outcomes in patients with voice disorders undergoing surgical or behavioral interventions. My ultimate aim is to utilize my research findings to develop novel interventions to prevent and manage voice disorders.
