Peter Acker
Clinical Associate Professor, Emergency Medicine
Clinical Focus
Emergency Medicine, Global Health, Health System Strengthening, Maternal and Child Health, Emergency Referral Systems, Maternal and Obstetric Emergencies, Medical Education, Prehospital Emergency Care, Emergency Ultrasonography
Research Interests
My research and work focus on optimizing the use of health system data to create intelligent and accurate emergency referral systems to ensure vulnerable populations receive the care they require as efficiently as possible. I am interested in increasing our understanding of currently available health infrastructure in resource limited settings, and pairing that knowledge with technology tools to help identify patient's true needs and match those needs with health system capacity in real-time.

The major goal of our research is to gain insight into the prevention and control of HIV and other viral pathogens by studying the interplay between the virus and the host immune response. We investigate the role of various arms of the immune response, but with a particular focus on NK cells. We hope to gain additional insights into control of infectious diseases by studying how pregnancy modulates immune responses.

Peter S. Kim
Virginia and D. K. Ludwig Professor of Biochemistry
Research Interests
Our research focuses on developing new strategies for vaccine creation. We also aim to generate vaccines targeting infectious agents that have eluded efforts to date. We integrate experimental approaches with protein language models to guide artificial evolution and enable efficient antibody and protein engineering. Our interdisciplinary approach aims to address critical global health challenges.

Desirée Rodrigues Plaça
Postdoctoral Scholar, Infectious Diseases
Research Interests
I am studying Flaviviridae viruses, focusing on dengue. My research explores T cell and myeloid dysregulation in severe dengue to improve vaccines and identify biomarkers. I'm characterizing T cell responses to DENV, and the regulatory immune response through integrative systems analysis. My ultimate goal is to contribute to the development of improved diagnostic tools and vaccines for pediatric infectious diseases, particularly in endemic regions like Brazil.
