Niaz Banaei
Professor of Pathology and of Medicine (Infectious Diseases)
Clinical Focus
Clinical Pathology, Mycobacterium Infections, Clinical Laboratory Techniques
Research Interests
His research interests include (1) development, assessment, and improvement of novel infectious diseases diagnostics, (2) enhancing the quality of C. difficile diagnostic results, and (3) characterization of M. tuberculosis virulence determinants.

Ovijit Chaudhuri
Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering and, by courtesy, of Bioengineering
Research Interests
We study the physics of cell migration, division, and morphogenesis in 3D, as well cell-matrix mechanotransduction, or the process by which cells sense and respond to mechanical properties of the extracellular matrices. For both these areas, we use engineered biomaterials for 3D culture as artificial extracellular matrices.

Bianxiao Cui
Job and Gertrud Tamaki Professor of Chemistry
Research Interests
Our objective is to develop new biophysical methods to advance current understandings of cellular machinery in the complicated environment of living cells. Currently, we are focusing on four research areas: (1) Membrane curvature at the nano-bio interface; (2) Nanoelectrode arrays (NEAs) for scalable intracellular electrophysiology; (3) Electrochromic optical recording (ECORE) for neuroscience; and (4) Optical control of neurotrophin receptor tyrosine kinases.

Elizabeth Egan
Assistant Professor of Pediatrics (Infectious Diseases) and of Microbiology and Immunology
Clinical Focus
Pediatric Infectious Diseases
Research Interests
Malaria is a parasitic disease transmitted by mosquitos that is a leading cause of childhood mortality globally. Public health efforts to control malaria have historically been hampered by the rapid development of drug resistance. The goal of our research is to understand the molecular determinants of critical host-pathogen interactions in malaria, with a focus on the erythrocyte host cell. Our long-term goal is to develop novel approaches to prevent or treat malaria and improve child health.

C. Garrison Fathman
Professor of Medicine (Immunology and Rheumatology), Emeritus
Research Interests
My lab of molecular and cellular immunology is interested in research in the general field of T cell activation and autoimmunity. We have identified and characterized a gene (GRAIL) that seems to control regulatory T cell (Treg) responsiveness by inhibiting the Treg IL-2 receptor desensitization. We have characterized a gene (Deaf1) that plays a major role in peripheral tolerance in T1D. Using PBC gene expression, we have provisionally identified a signature of risk and progression in T1D.
