Current Role at Stanford


The research we conduct focuses on the cognitive neuroscience of chronic infection-related diseases. We are currently exploring how the brain represents fatigue, post-exertional malaise and cognitive impairment in Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. With neurologically healthy and impaired participants, one prominent goal is to develop neuropsychological models of how infectious disease can produce cognitive impairment. Using a combination of Clinical Neuropsychiatric techniques, Neuropsychological testing and Electroencephalographic (EEG) measurement, we relate functional brain dynamics to patient symptoms in real time.

Our research team is also interested in motor control in CFS. Our current work suggests disturbances in response selection and overall control of movement within CFS. Hypotheses include how individuals with CFS process information related to attention shifting and preparation of response alternatives. We are interested in all high level functions of the cortex and how subcortical structures control the cortex.

Personal Interests


I am a classical pianist, but my interests do not lie in playing the piano; instead, with the help of many others, we are organizing a paradigm shift in the way which musicians are trained. Current training practices date to the late 1800's despite the fact that currently, music instruction itself is called upon to foster intellectual and musical growth in its participants. We therefore are announcing a movement to raise awareness of the issue of the need for best practices from child psychology, neuroscience and cognitive science to become part of everyday music teaching. Music knowledge is necessary, but not sufficient, for a good outcome for children in the arts, children who will stay in the arts as adults, and current adults in the arts. Our mission is simple: to build a much better musical experience for those in the arts, free of negative mental health issues. Our nonprofit society is at www.artspsych.org

The mission of the Society for Neuroscience and Psychology in the Performing Arts (SNPPA) is to advance research, education, treatment and professional practice related to the following:

?Facilitate the direct application of psychological, neurological, educational and neuroscientific research findings to the performing arts
?Integrate that research into practice (use of psychological and psychophysiological techniques into all aspects of the performing arts)
?Disseminate the products of this research to the larger community of psychologists and performing artists so as to be useful in common, everyday practice.
