Research Interests
Dr. Fortmann's interests include population-level (community) prevention of cardiovascular disease, the epidemiology and prevention of chronic diseases, and the effects of the built environment on health. He has conducted research projects addressing tobacco use cessation, tobacco control policy, the role of retail marketing on youth tobacco use, nutrition education, blood pressure control, and lipid disorders.

Research Interests
My initial research activities involved antiretroviral and novel therapeutic treatments of HIV infection, understanding elements of HIV pathogenesis associated with acute HIV infection and post exposure prevention. My most recent scholarly activities concentrate on working as a team to capitalize on the data stored in electronic medical records, HIV disease modeling and using electronic medical records for outcome research and developing a mentorship program for early career scientists.

My studies address:
1. Confidentiality and Access to Care studies of confidential time during well-visits and policy analyses addressing quality of care and health systems capacity for adolescents and young adults in the US and globally; and,
2, Tobacco, nicotine, and second-hand smoke studies of primary care counseling to reduce nicotine addiction in adolescents and programs to engage medical specialty groups in secondhand smoke clinical and policy interventions.

Dr. Meaney is a nationally and internationally recognized pediatric resuscitation scientist, and his current focus is on improving care for seriously ill children at the community clinic and district hospital level in low and middle income countries. Dr Meaney seeks to conduct the necessary research to pioneer, implement and evaluate innovative yet relevant and practical solutions to improve the quality of care for seriously ill or injured children worldwide.
