Research Interests
I am interested in elucidating factors that contribute to initiation, maintenance, and exacerbation of substance use, as well as problematic substance use consequences. To date, I have largely focused on investigating psychosocial aspects of social drinking experiences via naturalistic, experimental, and meta-analytic studies.
I additionally seek to use scholarly advocacy to enhance diversity, equity, and inclusion within clinical and academic spaces.

Research Interests
The Giardino Laboratory: our group aims to decipher the neural mechanisms underlying psychiatric conditions of stress, addiction, and sleep disturbances. Our work uses combinatorial technologies for precisely mapping, monitoring, and manipulating neural circuits that drive hedonic and homeostatic states. Projects in the lab are funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIAAA), the Whitehall Foundation, and the Brain Research Foundation.

Dr. Gotham’s research focuses on implementation science, including factors affecting implementation, and training and education of health care providers, across a range of evidence-based practices for adolescent and adult substance use and mental health disorders, co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders, and screening, brief intervention, and referral to treatment (SBIRT).

Dr. Humphreys researches individual and societal level interventions for addictive and psychiatric disorders. He focuses particularly on evaluating the outcomes of professionally-administered treatments and peer-operated self-help groups (e.g., Alcoholics Anonymous), and, analyzing the impact of public policies touching addiction, mental health, public health, and public safety.
