Vivek Bhalla, MD
Associate Professor of Medicine (Nephrology)
Clinical Focus
Nephrology, Hypertension, Resistant Hypertension, Diabtetic Kidney Disease, Electrolyte Disorders
Research Interests
Dr. Bhalla's two primary research interests are in the role of the kidney in diabetes and hypertension. We use molecular, biochemical, and transgenic approaches to study: (1) mechanisms diabetic kidney disease disease including the role of the endothelium to regulate inflammation and kidney injury; and (2) regulation of tubular transport of glucose, sodium, and potassium. These latter studies have treatment implications in diabetes, kidney disease, and hypertension.

Paulami Chatterjee
Postdoctoral Scholar, Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine
Research Interests
My research involves studying the pathogenic mechanisms underlying the host-pathogen interaction in pulmonary diseases. I am particularly interested in exploring transcriptomic and proteomic changes in Cystic Fibrosis and Asthma patients who develop severe allergic inflammation due to fungal hypersensitivity. Complete understanding of these interaction will help us identify significant fungal virulence factors and help us define clinically relevant targets for therapeutic use.

Christopher H. Contag
Professor of Pediatrics (Neonatology), Emeritus
Research Interests
We develop and use the tools of molecular imaging to understand oncogenesis, reveal patterns of cell migration in immunosurveillance, monitor gene expression, visualize stem cell biology, and assess the distribution of pathogens in living animal models of human biology and disease. Biology doesn't occur in "a vacuum" or on coated plates--it occurs in the living body and that's were we look for biological patterns and responses to insult.

Markus Covert
Shriram Chair of the Department of Bioengineering, Professor of Bioengineering and, by courtesy, of Chemical and Systems Biology
Research Interests
Our focus is on building computational models of complex biological processes, and using them to guide an experimental program. Such an approach leads to a relatively rapid identification and validation of previously unknown components and interactions. Biological systems of interest include metabolic, regulatory and signaling networks as well as cell-cell interactions. Current research involves the dynamic behavior of NF-kappaB, an important family of transcription factors.

Paul A. Khavari, MD, PhD
Carl J. Herzog Professor of Dermatology in the School of Medicine
Clinical Focus
Cancer > Cutaneous (Dermatologic) Oncology, Dermatology, General Dermatology
Research Interests
We work in epithelial tissue as a model system to study stem cell biology, cancer and new molecular therapeutics. Epithelia cover external and internal body surfaces and undergo constant self-renewal while responding to diverse environmental stimuli. Epithelial homeostasis precisely balances stem cell-sustained proliferation and differentiation-associated cell death, a balance which is lost in many human diseases, including cancer, 90% of which arise in epithelial tissues.

M. Peter Marinkovich, MD
Associate Professor of Dermatology
Clinical Focus
Cancer > Cutaneous (Dermatologic) Oncology, Epidermolysis Bullosa, Autoimmune Blistering Diseases, Pemphigus, Pemphigoid, Linear IgA Disease, Dermatitis Herpetiformis, Herpes Gestations, Dermatology
Research Interests
The Marinkovich lab studies the function of epithelial extracellular matrix molecules, including integrins, collagens and laminins in epithelial development and carcinoma progression. We apply our discoveries in this area towards development of molecular therapies for carcinomas, hair disease and inherited epithelial adhesive disorders.
