Dr. Jörg J. Goronzy specializes in the treatment of immunological and rheumatic diseases with an expertise in the care of patients with giant cell arteritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Before coming to Stanford in 2009, he was the Mason I. Lowance, M.D. Professor of Medicine at Emory University, Atlanta. From 1990 to 2003, he was on the faculty of the Mayo Clinic.

In this study we are trying to understand whether previous infection with a particular virus,
namely cytomegalovirus (CMV), influences the ability of the immune system to respond to new
infections or vaccinations with age.

In this study the investigators are trying to identify immune signatures that are associated
with effective or poor vaccine responses to naturally-acquired herpes zoster virus and the
zoster (shingles) vaccine, Zostavax.
