Bio

Heather graduated with a BS in Microbiology with an emphasis in Biotechnology from Florida Atlantic University. She is a Life Science Research Professional that joined the Department of Psychiatry in 2000, exploring genetic markers in antidepressant treatment and smoking cessation, gene expression in Alzheimer’s disease transgenic mouse models, cytokine expression in primary microglia and microglial-hippocampal organotypic co-cultures, and organizing a database of mood disorders subjects across labs to facilitate collaboration. She is currently focused on clinical research, working with the human side of the DNA she previously studied, and contributing to the advance of treatment options for depression and other mood disorders.

Research Interests
Our research focuses on understanding how immune responses initiate and accelerate synaptic and neuronal injury in age-related neurodegeneration, including models of Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease. We also focus on the role of immune responses in aggravating brain injury in models of stroke. Our goal is the identification of critical immune pathways that function in neurologic disorders and that can be targeted to elicit disease modifying effects.

Research Interests
Astrocytes, microglia and neurons interact, and have unique vulnerabilities to injury based on their patterns of gene expression and their functional roles. We focus on the cellular and molecular basis of brain cell injury in stroke. We study the effects of altering miRNA expression, altering levels of heat shock and cell death regulatory proteins. Our goal is to improve outcome by improving mitochondrial function and brain cell survival, and reducing oxidative stress and inflammation.

Research Interests
The Knowles lab studies how white matter structure changes in different forms of epilepsy, and how aberrant white matter structure, in turn, shapes neuronal network function. In mouse models, we use a variety of innovative tools including neurophysiology, quantitative EEG, behavior, histological measures of white matter structure and MR imaging. We also conduct clinical research to study white matter abnormalities in children with epilepsy.

Statistics/Data Science. I develop & apply models, methods & algorithms for complex data in medical science & biology. My work in statistical genetics includes: the invention of Plaid bi-clustering for gene expression data; methods for twin, association, & family studies; multiple testing & estimation for high dimensional arrays.
