My clinical focus is on diagnostic surgical pathology with emphasis on cardiopulmonary disease, head and neck pathology and gastrointestinal pathology. My research interests include cardiothoracic transplantation, vasculitis, myocarditis, interstitial lung disease and thoracic oncology.

Microarray Analysis of Gene Expression and Identification of Progenitor Cells in Lung Carcinoma Not Recruiting

This study will help us understand the gene expression profiles of lung cancer. We will identify genes related to lung cancer development, their growth and metastasis to the lung. In addition, we will examine the role nicotine in the development and progression of lung tumors of smokers, ex-smokers, non-smokers on supplemental nicotine and non smokers with no exposure to nicotine.

Research Interests
My lab of molecular and cellular immunology is interested in research in the general field of T cell activation and autoimmunity. We have identified and characterized a gene (GRAIL) that seems to control regulatory T cell (Treg) responsiveness by inhibiting the Treg IL-2 receptor desensitization. We have characterized a gene (Deaf1) that plays a major role in peripheral tolerance in T1D. Using PBC gene expression, we have provisionally identified a signature of risk and progression in T1D.

Our research program has several active projects:
1.) Pulmonary Vascular Disease Simvastatin reversed experimental pulmonary hypertension, and is safe for treatment of patients. Blinded clinical trials of efficacy are in progress.
2.) Lung inflammation and regeneration (stem cells)
3.) Lung surfactant rheology and oxidative stress
4.) Gene regulation by RNA binding proteins, NF45 and NF90 through transcriptional and posttranscriptional mechanisms

My laboratory is focused on defining cellular and molecular mechanisms that limit T cell responses to vaccines and pathogens during normal early postnatal development and in cases of inherited genetic immunodeficiencies. We are also determinomg how these limitations in immunity can be overcome by using novel approaches for vaccine adjuvants for influenza vaccine and by using catalytically inactive Cas proteins for inducing endogenous gene expression.
