Emma Elizabeth Biggs
Postdoctoral Scholar, Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine
Research Interests
My main research interests are in the field of chronic pain and learning. I am interested in understanding how processes related to learning can contribute to the development, spreading, and treatment of chronic pain. I am especially interested in understanding how fear and pain interact across complex brain networks.

Lu Chen
Professor of Neurosurgery and of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences
Research Interests
What distinguishes us humans from other animals is our ability to undergo complex behavior. The synapses are the structural connection between neurons that mediates the communication between neurons, which underlies our various cognitive function. My research program aims to understand the cellular and molecular mechanisms that underlie synapse function during behavior in the developing and mature brain, and how synapse function is altered during mental retardation.

Luis de Lecea
Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences (Major Laboratories and Clinical and Translational Neurosciences Incubator)
Research Interests
My lab uses molecular, optogenetic, anatomical and behavioral methods to identify and manipulate the neuronal circuits underlying brain arousal, with particular attention to sleep and wakefulness transitions. We are also interested in the changes that occur in neuronal circuits in conditions of hyperarousal such as stress and drug addiction.

Joseph Garner
Professor of Comparative Medicine and, by courtesy, of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences
Research Interests
The medical research community has long recognized that "good well-being is good science". The lab uses an integrated interdisciplinary approach to explore this interface, while providing tangible deliverables for the well-being of human patients and research animals.

William Giardino
Assistant Professor (Research) of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences (Sleep Medicine)
Research Interests
The Giardino Laboratory: our group aims to decipher the neural mechanisms underlying psychiatric conditions of stress, addiction, and sleep disturbances. Our work uses combinatorial technologies for precisely mapping, monitoring, and manipulating neural circuits that drive hedonic and homeostatic states. Projects in the lab are funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIAAA), the Whitehall Foundation, and the Stanford Center for Women's Health and Sex Differences in Medicine (WHSDM).
