    Bio High resolution and fidelity in measuring (epi)genetic variation is the foundation of precision cancer genomics. As a geneticist and computational biologist, my research is focused on bioinformatic innovations to improve the detection and quantification of intra tumor heterogeneity (ITH) from next generation sequencing (NGS) data, and leverage patterns of ITH to infer the evolutionary dynamics of human cancers.

    During my research tenure, I have developed considerable expertise in algorithm design and statistical analysis of (epi)genetic data, as well as in the computational modelling of cancer, such as gene regulatory circuits and cellular automata models. My unique experiences and quantitative training have enabled me to conduct impactful research at the interface of cancer genomics, computational and systems biology. My goal is to continue to develop algorithms and computational methods that advance a mechanistic understanding of tumor evolution and that are accessible and broadly utilized by the cancer biology community.

    Bio Vivien Sun is a pediatric hospitalist and Clinical Instructor within Stanford’s Division of Pediatric Hospital Medicine. She practices at Stanford Healthcare-Valleycare and John Muir Medical Center. Vivien’s interests include medical education, professional development, and caring for the underserved.

    Vivien graduated from Harvard University with a BA in Chemistry with a language citation in Mandarin. She went on to receive an MPhil in Public Health from Cambridge University and an MD from the University of California, San Francisco. She completed her pediatrics residency at UCSF with the Pediatric Leadership for the Underserved (PLUS) program. Upon completion of residency, she served as Chief Resident of pediatrics at UCSF-Mission Bay.

    Bio Dr. Wenchao Sun is a research scientist in the Biomaterials and Advanced Drug Delivery (BioADD) Laboratory at Stanford University, California, USA. A biochemist by training, Dr. Sun has strong research experience in small molecule and biologics delivery systems (protein and gene delivery) and bioanalytical techniques. He received his undergraduate degree in Biological Sciences from Tsinghua University, Beijing, China. He went on to pursue his PhD in Dr. Pamela B. Davis lab at Case Western Reserve University, Ohio, USA. While learning about Cystic Fibrosis in Dr. Davis lab, he became interested in non-viral gene delivery as a novel therapy for this genetic disease. He studied the interaction of polymer based DNA nanoparticles with cells and acquired experience in bioconjugation. Dr. Sun then joined the BioADD lab at Stanford University for his postdoctoral training where he expanded his interest in drug delivery to include therapeutic proteins and small molecules. He soon became an expert in transdermal drug and protein delivery. He also delved into the mechanistic study of a small molecule drug for Alzheimer’s disease. He is now in charge of the Bioanalytical Division of the lab where he uses liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (LCMS) to conduct bioanalysis and metabolite ID of small molecule drugs. Being in the forefront of translational research, Dr. Sun played a leading role in a number of collaborative projects.

    Current Research and Scholarly Interests We are interested in the role of inositol phosphatases in eye development and disease, using both animal models and human disease tissue. We are a translational laboratory seeking to understand the basic function of proteins as well as developing therapeutic strategies for clinical trials.
