Heather Ryan Pankow
Life Science Research Professional 2, Psych/General Psychiatry and Psychology (Adult)
Bio Heather graduated with a BS in Microbiology with an emphasis in Biotechnology from Florida Atlantic University. She is a Life Science Research Professional that joined the Department of Psychiatry in 2000, exploring genetic markers in antidepressant treatment and smoking cessation, gene expression in Alzheimer’s disease transgenic mouse models, cytokine expression in primary microglia and microglial-hippocampal organotypic co-cultures, and organizing a database of mood disorders subjects across labs to facilitate collaboration. She recently shifted focus to clinical research and is excited to be involved with the human side of the DNA she has been studying. She is looking forward to contributing to the advance of treatment options for depression and other mood disorders.

Sergiu P. Pasca
Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences
Current Research and Scholarly Interests A critical challenge in understanding the intricate programs underlying development, assembly and dysfunction of the human brain is the lack of direct access to intact, functioning human brain tissue for detailed investigation by imaging, recording, and stimulation.
Our lab is using pluripotent stem cells derived non-invasively from human individuals to generate in a dish specific regions of the human brain in a functional 3D preparation we have developed. We are using months-to-years long ‘brain-a-dish’ cultures (also known as brain region-specific organoids or spheroids) to understand how neurons find their final position in the brain and how they mature functionally. To investigate how different brain regions talk to each-other in normal and diseased states, we introduced a new approach for in vitro assembly of neural circuits, also known as assembloids.
We employ state-of-the-art stem cell biology, genome engineering, imaging and neuroscience approaches to identify the dynamical processes that go awry in neural cells derived from patients with neuropsychiatric disorders, such as autism or schizophrenia, and what should be therapeutically targeted in these conditions. -

Kilian M Pohl
Associate Professor (Research) of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences (Public Mental Health and Population Sciences)
Current Research and Scholarly Interests The foundation of the laboratory of Associate Professor Kilian M. Pohl, PhD, is computational science aimed at identifying biomedical phenotypes improving the mechanistic understanding, diagnosis, and treatment of neuropsychiatric disorders. The biomedical phenotypes are discovered by unbiased, machine learning-based searches across biological, neuroimaging, and neuropsychological data. This data-driven discovery currently supports the adolescent brain research of the NIH-funded National Consortium on Alcohol and NeuroDevelopment in Adolescence (NCANDA) and the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD), the largest long-term study of brain development and child health in the US. The laboratory also investigates brain patterns specific to alcohol use disorder and the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) across the adult age range, and have advanced the understanding of a variety of brain diseases including schizophrenia, Alzheimer’s disease, glioma, and aging.
