    Current Research and Scholarly Interests The Ó Maoiléidigh group employs mathematical and computational approaches to better understand normal hearing and hearing impairment. Because complete restoration of auditory function by artificial devices or regenerative treatments will only be possible when experiments and computational modeling align, we work closely with experimental laboratories. Our goal is to understand contemporary experimental observations, to make experimentally testable predictions, and to motivate new experiments. We are pursuing several projects.

    Hair-Bundle Mechanics

    Auditory and balance organs rely on hair cells to convert mechanical vibrations into electrical signals for transmission to the brain. In response to the quietest sounds we can hear, the hair cell's mechanical sensor, the hair bundle, moves by less than one-billionth of a meter. To determine how this astounding sensitivity is possible, we construct computational models of hair-bundle mechanics. By comparing models with experimental observations, we are learning how a hair bundle's geometry, material properties, and ability to move spontaneously determine its function.

    Cochlear Mechanics

    The cochlea contains the auditory organ that houses the sensory hair cells in mammals. Vibrations in the cochlea arising from sound are amplified more than a thousandfold by the ear's active process. New experimental techniques have additionally revealed that the cochlea vibrates in a complex manner in response to sound. We use computational models to interpret these observations and to make hypotheses about how the cochlea works.

    Current Research and Scholarly Interests Many adult organs tune their functional capacity to variable levels of physiologic demand. Adaptive organ resizing breaks the allometry of the body plan that was established during development, suggesting that it occurs through different mechanisms. Emerging evidence points to stem cells as key players in these mechanisms. We use the Drosophila midgut, a stem-cell based organ analogous to the vertebrate small intestine, as a simple model to uncover the rules that govern adaptive remodeling.

    Current Research and Scholarly Interests Dr. O'Hara's research aims to investigate how cognitive information processing deficits subserve affective symptoms in psychiatric disorders, and interact with key brain networks integral to these disorders. To do so, she has implemented a translational, interdisciplinary program that encompasses cellular models, brain and behavioral assays of affective and cognitive information processing systems in psychiatric disorders across the lifespan.

    Bio Dr. Michelle O'Shaughnessy specializes in the treatment of kidney disease and hypertension. She practiced Internal Medicine and Nephrology for 4 years in Ireland before coming to Stanford in 2013 to complete a 3-year Clinical Research Fellowship in nephrology. Dr. O'Shaughnessy has a special interest in treating and studying patients with glomerular diseases i.e. those diseases that affect the glomerulus (or filtering portion) of the kidney.

    Bio Juno Obedin-Maliver, MD, MPH, MAS, FACOG, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Stanford University School of Medicine.

    Dr. Juno Obedin-Maliver is a board-certified obstetrician/gynecologist who provides excellent clinical care and strives to advance scientific knowledge through her research.

    She practices full-spectrum gynecology including outpatient, in-patient, operative, and emergency care services. This specifically includes collaborative management of cervical dysplasia and abnormal pap smears, abnormal uterine bleeding, contraception and family planning, pelvic pain, abnormal discharge, sexually transmitted infection testing and treatment, and more. She specializes in the gynecological and reproductive health care needs of sexual and gender minority people which include but are not limited to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and questioning (LGBTQ+) people. This interest and experience drives her research interests towards promoting the health and well-being and equity of LGBTQ people.

    Dr. Obedin-Maliver, is the Co-Director of The PRIDE Study (pridestudy.org), a multi-site online prospective longitudinal cohort of sexual and gender minority individuals based at Stanford. She also serves on the medical advisory board of the University of California San Francisco Center of Excellence for Transgender Health and is helping to author the next version of the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH) Standards of Care. Dr. Obedin-Maliver has also been active in health policy including involvement in helping to legally redefine consideration of sexually intimate partner status and to remove the Medicare Non-Coverage Determination ruling on gender -affirming surgeries.

    Bio Michelle Odden, PhD, is an Associate Professor of Epidemiology in the Department of Health Research and Policy. Her research aims to improve our understanding of the optimal preventive strategies for chronic disease in older adults, particularly those who have been underrepresented in research including the very old, frail, and racial/ethnic minorities. Her work has focused on prevention of cardiovascular and kidney outcomes, as well as preservation of physical and cognitive function in older adults. She is also strongly interested in epidemiological and statistical methods to reduce biases in observational studies. Dr. Odden came to Stanford from Oregon State University, where she helped build the new College of Public Health and Human Sciences. She completed her Ph.D. in Epidemiology from the University of California, Berkeley (2009), a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco in Primary Care Research (2011).

    Bio Dr. David Oji is a board certified and fellowship trained orthopaedic surgeon specializing in the operative and non-operative treatment of all aspects of foot and ankle disorders. After finishing his orthopaedic surgery residency at The Johns Hopkins Hospital, he did his fellowship at Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland under the leadership of Dr. Lew Schon, the former president of the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society. There he underwent advanced training in the forefront of foot and ankle surgery including total ankle replacements, use of stem cells to promote healing of acute and chronic conditions, non-fusion techniques of great toe arthritis, and complex ankle and foot reconstruction.

    During his training, he assisted in treating the Baltimore Orioles and amateur ballet dancers. Dr. Oji also took part in conducting advanced biomechanical and clinical research and has written chapters in textbooks with topics ranging from arthroscopic treatment of talar cartilage defects to the diabetic foot.

    After fellowship, he was in private practice working closely with the community as the team physicians for many of the local high school sports teams.

    In June of 2017, Dr. Oji joined the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Stanford University School of Medicine as a Clinical Assistant Professor. In addition to his usual clinical and educational responsibilities, he is also one of the team physicians for Stanford University Athletic programs.

    Since starting at Stanford, he has been on the forefront of ankle and foot surgery. He has performed the first out patient total ankle replacement and the first total talar replacement at Stanford. He is an advocate of minimally invasive ankle and foot surgery performing one of the first MIS (minimally invasive surgery) bunion surgeries in the Bay Area. Whenever possible, the smallest incision and the least invasive approach will be done to allow the patient to heal faster including tendosopy, small joint arthroscopy, endoscopic Haglund's resection, minimally invasive osteotomy, and minimally invasive great toe cheilectomy.

    He has a special focus in the treatment of ankle and foot orthopaedic sports injuries such as chronic ankle instability, cartilage injuries, Achilles injuries, using surgery only as a last resort to return the patient to peak athletic form.

    In addition, he has extensive experience in complex ankle and foot reconstruction such as ankle replacements, flatfeet reconstruction, fusions of the foot and hindfoot, and Charcot foot/ankle reconstruction.

    Bio Dr. Okonski is an anesthesiologist specializing in pediatric anesthesia, regional anesthesia and acute pain management. He comes to Stanford after two decades of experience working in a tertiary care private practice where he led the pediatric anesthesia team. Additionally, he was part of the adult cardiac anesthesia, echocardiography, regional anesthesia, and acute pain management teams.

    Outside the hospital, global medicine is a priority, and Dr. Okonski has travelled extensively on medical mission trips throughout the globe. Finally, he has a special interest in marine mammal medicine, and he works regularly with veterinarians at the Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito providing anesthesia and research support for perioperative care of pinnipeds and cetaceans.

    Bio Marily Oppezzo is a behavioral and learning scientist. She completed her doctorate in Educational Psychology at Stanford in 2013. She also is a registered dietitian and has her master's of nutritional science. She completed her dietetic internship at the Palo Alto Veterans Hospital, and currently consults as a sports dietitian for Stanford's Runsafe program. Her research interests leverage her interdisciplinary training, with a focus on how to get people to change to improve their health and well-being. Specifically, these areas include: using social media to motivate physical activity changes in those with or at risk for heart disease; culturally tailoring nutrition and physical activity recommendations and education materials for an Alaskan native population; how walking can be used to improve people's cognitive and creative thinking; and applying learning theories to medical education topics.

    Bio Lisa A. Orloff, MD, FACS, FACE is Director of the Endocrine Head and Neck Surgery Program and Professor in the Department of Otolaryngology, Division of Head and Neck Surgery, at Stanford University School of Medicine. She is Director of the Stanford Thyroid Tumor Program within the Stanford Cancer Center. Her clinical practice focuses on the surgical management of thyroid and parathyroid tumors.

    Dr. Orloff is an internationally recognized leader in the field of endocrine head and neck surgery. She is also an expert in the application of ultrasonography to the diagnosis and management of diseases of the head and neck, with an emphasis on thyroid cancer. Her background in microvascular and laryngeal surgical techniques lends a unique level of refinement to her endocrine surgical practice. A major component of her clinical work is the management of persistent or recurrent thyroid cancer. Dr. Orloff’s multidisciplinary approach to the management of endocrine head and neck disease involves collaboration with her colleagues in other specialties at Stanford and throughout the country. Dr. Orloff also studies the regeneration of tissue that has been lost as a result of cancer therapies. 

    Dr. Orloff received her bachelor’s degree at Stanford, and her medical degree from the University of California, Los Angeles. She completed her residency in Otolaryngology/Head & Neck Surgery at the University of Washington and a visiting fellowship in Microvascular & Reconstructive Surgery at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York. Prior to joining the faculty at Stanford, she was the Robert K. Werbe Distinguished Professor in Head and Neck Cancer, and Chief of the Division of Head and Neck Surgery at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF.)

    Dr. Orloff served three consecutive terms as the Chair of the American Academy of Otolaryngology—Head and Neck Surgery (AAO-HNS) Endocrine Surgery committee, and served for many years as a voting member of the FDA’s Panel to evaluate medical devices for Otolaryngology. She holds leadership roles within the American Head and Neck Society, the American Thyroid Association, the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine, and the American College of Surgeons. She is co-chair of the ACS Thyroid, Parathyroid, and Neck Ultrasound training program and a member of the ACS National Ultrasound Faculty executive board. She is also a member of such influential teams as the National Cancer Institute (NCI) steering committee on Thyroid Cancer Clinical Trials and the Endocrine Surgery Committee of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinology (AACE). She authored the leading textbook, Head and Neck Ultrasonography (Plural Publishing), as a reference for clinicians; the second edition was published in 2017. Dr. Orloff is a former Fulbright scholar.

    Current Research and Scholarly Interests While I spend half my time co-directing the MS in Human Genetics and Genetic Counseling program, my research focuses on the intersection between genetics and ethics, particularly around the translation of new genetic technologies (such as genome sequencing, non-invasive prenatal diagnosis and gene editing) into clinical practice. I am especially interested in patient decision making, consent and disclosure of genetic test results, and the interface between genetics and disability.

    Current Research and Scholarly Interests Our lab uses the skin to answer questions about epithelial stem cell biology, differentiation and carcinogenesis using genomics, genetics, and cell biological techniques. We have studied how hedgehog signaling regulates regeneration and skin cancer, and how tumors evolve to develop resistance. We study the mechanisms of early human skin development using human embryonic stem cells. These fundamentals studies provide a greater understanding of epithelial biology and novel disease therapeutics.

He completed his M.D., Ph.D. training at the McGovern Medical School and the M. D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, TX. He then completed residency training in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology followed by fellowship training in Surgical Pathology and Cytopathology at Stanford University. He is board certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology as well as Cytopathology. His interests include pulmonary neoplasms as well as neoplasms of the Head and Neck. He also has developed collaborative research interests in utilizing fine needle aspiration (FNA) techniques in the growing clinical application of Chimeric Antigen T Cell (CAR-T) therapy.
