Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Adolescent Medicine
Bio Shivani is a postdoctoral research fellow in Prof. Bonnie Halpern-Felsher’s lab, focusing on adolescents' risky behaviors, especially patterns of use and perceptions about electronic cigarettes, new tobacco products and other substances.
Through her Ph.D., Shivani developed and evaluated an arts-based educational program to reduce mental-health-related stigma in India. The program had a large, significant and positive effect on participants - they desired greater social proximity to people living with mental health problems. Her interdisciplinary Ph.D. research at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine was supported by the PHFI-UKC Wellcome Trust Capacity Strengthening Award (2014-18). In 2017, she received the LSHTM Public Engagement Small Grant to strengthen school teachers’ understanding of mental health problems, which resulted in a monthly column in a popular educational magazine, reaching approximately 40,000 Indian teachers every month.
Previously, Shivani designed, implemented and evaluated health communication and behavior change initiatives at the Public Health Foundation of India from 2008-2014. She is especially passionate about designing educational public health programs to break silences around contentious public health issues, using participatory media and entertainment-education.
Stephen J. Galli, MD
The Mary Hewitt Loveless, M.D. Professor in the School of Medicine and Professor of Pathology and of Microbiology and Immunology
Current Research and Scholarly Interests The goals of Dr. Galli's laboratory are to understand the regulation of mast cell and basophil development and function, and to develop and use genetic approaches to elucidate the roles of these cells in health and disease. We study both the roles of mast cells, basophils, and IgE in normal physiology and host defense, e.g., in responses to parasites and in enhancing resistance to venoms, and also their roles in pathology, e.g., anaphylaxis, food allergy, and asthma, both in mice and humans.
Clinical Professor, Pediatrics - Infectious Diseases
Current Research and Scholarly Interests The focus of my laboratory is the immune response to viral vaccines evaluating the ontogeny of responses in infants and limitations in immunocompromised hosts. We have studied responses to an early two-dose measles immunization, one versus 2 doses of varicella immunization, and polio vaccine in preterm versus term infants. Other active areas of research include measles and varicella immunity in HIV infected individuals, and transplant recipients.

Current Research and Scholarly Interests The medical research community has long recognized that good well-being is good science. The lab uses an integrated interdisciplinary approach to explore this interface, while providing tangible deliverables for the well-being of human patients and research animals.

Current Research and Scholarly Interests The advent of high dimensional flow cytometry has revolutionized our ability to study and visualize the human immune system. Our group combines high parameter mass cytometry (a.k.a Cytometry by Time of Flight Mass Spectrometry, CyTOF), with advanced bio-computational methods to study how the human immune system responds and adapts to acute physiological perturbations. The laboratory currently focuses on two clinical scenarios: surgical trauma and pregnancy.

Current Research and Scholarly Interests Over the past year, Dr. Gengoux's research has continued to focus on the design and evaluation of effective naturalistic behavioral treatment programs for young children with autism. Dr. Gengoux oversees the supervision of a team of therapists providing parent training and in-home treatment for a randomized controlled trial of Pivotal Response Treatment (PI: Hardan) which is nearing completion. Dr. Gengoux has also continued to strengthen the community partnership with Abilities United where she leads an innovative inclusive social skills research program (PI: Gengoux) focused on improving peer initiations made by children with ASD. A parent training program will be added in the coming year to enhance the program's effectiveness in fostering meaningful friendships for children. Preliminary findings from both projects have been presented at national and international conferences.
