    Bio Dr. Das specializes in the treatment of thoracic malignancies. She sees and treats patients both at the Stanford Cancer Center and at the Palo Alto VA Hospital. She is Chief of Oncology at the Palo Alto VA and also leads the VA thoracic tumor board on a biweekly basis. She has a strong interest in clinical research, serving as a principal investigator for multiple clinical and translational studies at the Palo Alto VA, and also as a co-investigator on all of the lung cancer trials at Stanford. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her family, traveling, and running.

    Current Research and Scholarly Interests I have two research areas:
    1) Heart disease in South Asians - genetic, metabolic, & behavioral underpinnings of an aggressive phenotype.

    2) Imaging cell injury & recovery in the heart. Using Cardiac MRI to visualize signals of early injury and facilitating preventive medical therapy. Optimizing new imaging methods for viable cells to delineate live heart cells or transplanted stem cells.

    Current Research and Scholarly Interests The treatment of chronic pain with long term opioid medication is what has fueled the so called “opioid epidemic” with drug overdose deaths quadrupling in the past decade and addiction rates estimated to be more than 20 percent of patients taking medical opioids long term. Associated complications with these medications are not generally known to the patients. The project enables the patient to examine risks versus benefits, presents safer and more effective alternatives to opioid therapy and educates about options available for reducing or transitioning off opioids.

I am interested in understanding the role that the BMP and Wnt pathways play in regulating functions of pulmonary endothelial and smooth muscle cells both in health and disease.

    Stanley Deresinski

    Bio Dr. Deresinski received his medical degree from the University of Illinois College of Medicine and received training in Internal Medicine there and at Stanford, where he also completed a fellowship in Infectious Diseases. For 3 decades, he maintained a private practice in Infectious Disease, HIV, and Travel Medicine and was Hospital Epidemiologist at Sequoia Hospital where he also served as President of the Medical Staff for 2 years. He was also Associate Chief of the Division of Infectious Diseases and for 14 years was Director of the AIDS Program at the Santa Valley Medical Center, a Stanford-affiliated public teaching hospital. During that time he won several teaching awards at Stanford. In 1987, he founded the AIDS Community Research Consortium, serving as its Medical Director and Chairman of the Board for almost 2 decades. He was also Site Principal Investigator for the Stanford ACTU and the California Collaborative Treatment Group and has worked on AIDS education in Kampala, Uganda. Dr. Deresinski is currently Clinical Professor of Medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases and Geographic Medicine at Stanford and is Medical Director of the Stanford Antimicrobial Stewardship Program and Chair of the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee and of the Specialty Drugs Subcommittee. He has special interests in antimicrobial resistance, optimal antimicrobial use, fungal infections, and infections in immunocomopromised hosts.

    Dr. Deresinski has published more than 100 peer-reviewed papers as well as number of book chapters. He is a Section Editor of Clinical Infectious Diseases and is a past Chair of the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) Standards and Practice Guidelines Committee as well as member of the IDSA Board of Directors. He is a member of the HIVMA, in addition to a number of other societies including SHEA and is a Fellow in the American College of Physicians as well as IDSA. He is a past winner of the IDSA Watanakunokorn Clinician of the YearAward.

    Bio Dr. Kaniksha Desai is a board-certified endocrinologist and clinical assistant professor of endocrinology at Stanford University. She completed her endocrinology fellowship at the Mayo Clinic, with an emphasis on the management of patients with thyroid cancer. Dr. Desai’s clinical practice focuses on the management of patients with thyroid diseases, including thyroid nodules and thyroid cancers, and the management of patients with pituitary disorders. She also maintains board certification in neck ultrasonography and internal medicine.

She is interested in the application of biostatistical methods to all areas of medicine including oncology, nephrology, and endocrinology. She works on methods for the analysis of epidemiologic studies, clinical trials, and studies with missing observations.

    Current Research and Scholarly Interests We investigate the cellular and molecular events that regulate proper development of the lungs, including how the gas exchange region is maintained and renewed throughout life. We apply this knowledge to dissect how dysregulation of these normal processes can cause or contribute to specific lung diseases like pulmonary fibrosis, emphysema, and lung cancer, and we are interested in uncovering how lung stem cells are regulated in the hopes of harnessing them as a regenerative therapy for patients.

    2. Expression of the plasminogen activator inhibitor (PAI) 1 antibody in peripheral blood after lung transplantation and its association with bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome (chronic rejection).
    3. Impact of airway hypoxia, due to lack of bronchial circulation, on long-term lung transplant outcomes.
    4. CMV specific T-cell immunity in lung transplant recipients and its impact on acute rejection.

    Current Research and Scholarly Interests My research uses cultivation-independent methods to investigate human-associated microbiota during health and disease. This work exploits high-throughput molecular approaches to characterize stereotypic patterns of microbial prevalence, diversity and abundance associated with specific clinical syndromes of interest. I am especially interested in identifying and enumerating cultivation-resistant pathogens causing cryptic infections, particularly intra-amniotic infections leading to preterm birth.

    Bio Dr. Chitra Dinakar is a Clinical Professor of Medicine at Stanford University and the Clinical Chief of Allergy, Asthma and Immunodeficiency, Stanford Health Care. Prior to coming to Stanford she was a Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Missouri-Kansas City; and Director, Food Allergy Center at Children’s Mercy Hospital, Kansas City. She completed her fellowship in Allergy/Immunology (A/I) at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, Ohio, and her residency in pediatrics at Case Western Reserve University/Metrohealth Medical Center, Ohio. She completed her medical school and pediatric residency training at JIPMER, a premier medical institution in India.

    Having had the benefit of experiencing health care in diverse settings, Dr. Dinakar is empowered with the perspective, and driven by the passion, to improve health care across the globe. Her interests and expertise include food allergies, asthma, and health care disparities, delivery, and outcomes. She serves on the editorial boards of four reputed Allergy/Immunology journals and the World Allergy Organization Web Editorial Board. She has been involved in more than 50 multi-centered, clinical trials relating to asthma and food allergies, and has over 100 peer-reviewed publications and research abstracts in prestigious journals.

    One of her current research interests is ASIAd (Allergy/Asthma Studies in Individuals of Asian Descent), that explores the Care, Cure and Prevention of Allergic conditions in individuals of Asian lineage. As part of the exploration she is collaborating with researchers from Northwestern University to study the unique food allergens prevalent in the South Asian population (please click on link: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/SouthAsianFoodAllergySurvey). She hopes to address the significant knowledge gaps and unmet needs regarding diagnostic, treatment and preventive options available to this demographic group. Another current area of focus is development of tools to improve patient outcomes in food allergic disorders; she recently received a grant to support phase I of the project. Her other ongoing research interests include the health impact of e-cigarettes, clinical intervention trials and outcomes research in asthma, and use of e-health to improve patient outcomes.

    She is an invited speaker at national and international allergy conferences, and serves on the Board of Directors at national A/I organizations [American Board of A/I; American Academy of A/I; Joint A/I Task Force on Practice Parameters; American Academy of Pediatrics Section of A/I]. Dr. Dinakar’s honors include the following national awards: ”Distinguished Fellow", "Woman in Allergy", “Acellus Teacher of the Year”, "Award of Excellence", and an honorary “Kentucky Colonel” awarded by the Governor of Kentucky, “Best Doctors in America”, and “Kansas City SuperDocs”.

    Bio I am a faculty member in Biomedical Informatics Research at Stanford and board-certified internal medicine and clinical informatics. I split my time between clinical practice, hospital medical informatics and applications of artificial intelligence in healthcare. I work with the Clinical Excellence Research Center – a research group dedicated to reducing the cost of high-quality care – directing the Partnership in AI collaboration with the Stanford Artificial Intelligence Lab. Recognizing that the complexity of medicine has grown beyond the abilities of even the most expert clinician, we focus applications of computer vision to address some of the greatest challenges in healthcare: perfecting intended care for frail patients in settings ranging from the intensive care unit to the home. I have published work in the New England Journal of Medicine, Health Affairs, Annals of Internal Medicine, and the Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association. My interests include a design-based approach to understand how technology has impacted the work of clinicians and implications for new care models, workflow, and technology integration.
